Publishers Weekly just released their list of the best books of the year including 11 picture books for children. We were pleased to see several we've reviewed ourselves including Jon Klassen's I Want My Hat Back, Press Here by Hervé Tullet and Where's Walrus? by Stephen Savage. For older children, they've honored 24 books of fiction and 5 nonfiction titles. You can find the lists and brief descriptions at Publishers Weekly. And, of course, if you're on the hunt for good kids books, you can find more lists on our Mega 'List of Lists' to Find Great Kids Books and more advice for How To Select Good Picture Books.

Nomade Express Slee...
The other day, I tried to buy a picture book at a bricks-and-mortar book store, and found shelves in the kids' section full of toys, but precious few books. Seems you have to buy them online now...
I just hate book stores covered in toys and/or "books" that are utter junk. I totally avoid chain book stores now. Why pay full price and have a lousy experience.
I split my dollars between amazon and the amazing children's books store in my city, Children's Book World.
I wish there were a children's bookstore here, but only the big chain is left (and even they are wobbling).
I'm lucky to have a little bookstore near my home, and I shop there all the time. I bought the Hervé Tullet book for my son and it has been a huge success. I even bought the corresponding iPhone app which was a lifesaver when we crossed the Atlantic on plane.
When I visited my sister in Los Angeles, I went into Barns and Noble (spelling uncertain) and was surprised at the huge amount of non-book products. Isn't it supposed to be a library ? The grown-ups section of the store was totally disorganized, no category, no theme, nothing but alphabetization by author. I'm happy to see I'm not the only one disappointed.
Like JudiAU, I split my money between my local library, which I love, and amazon.
Sorry, I mistranslated bookstore. Whenever I write "library", I mean "bookstore". Sorry, still making to many mistake in English, since it is not my native language.
