We were taken aback when we came across Canadian company PURE and Ami McKay's beautiful and "guilt-free" furniture line. They've managed to create green furniture without sacrificing on style (something easier said than done). All of the materials used in the production of PURE's furniture are biodegradable and sustainable. We love PURE's focus on sustainability and health, but we're convinced their pieces would appeal to non-greenies as well...
What is PURE? PURE is the vision and result of interior designer Ami McKay, who is most well-known for her role on HGTV Canada's Makeover Wish. After years of working with clients who were frustrated by the lack of stylish, eco-friendly designs for their home, she set out to create her own line of elegant, sustainable furniture. PURE's mantra is "you do not have to compromise style for healthy and sustainable furniture."
The furniture designs are divided up into four categories: Water (Fluid and Sensuous), Fire (Bold and Sensual), Earth (Grounded and Welcome), and Air (Light and Free). The result is a variety of pieces, some of which have a vintage, feminine feel (think Anthropologie), and others which are more streamlined. Furniture can be custom ordered without the embroidery, although personally we love that element! The materials used include:
• Biodegradable, natural latex rubber
• FSC Certified Hardwood Frames
• Organic Cotton Batting
• Renewable jute and latex webbing
• Non-toxic adhesives
• OEKO-tex certified wool fabrics with organic dyes
• Renewable and sustainable Kirei grass and wheat boards
• Hemp and bamboo
They have a number of showrooms in Canada and the US, including Green Depot and Vivavi in New York.
