Fire safety has never been so trendy: a Dutch designer has created the Chick-a-dee, a bird-shaped smoke alarm that chirps instead of beeps. The product was a hit at the New York International Gift Fair, and will be on shelves in the US this month. In other news, Frank Gehry builds an igloo and Manhattan's skyline will get a distinctive addition in One57.

White Enamel Four-P...
Oh boy! Must have!!
OMG this is the very first time I'm screaming "Must have it!" Maybe from now on my neighbors won't get scared every time I take a hot shower and it's resulting steam setting off the smoke detector.
I don't like this idea - if the smoke detector is going off, I want everyone in the house to be able to identify what it is, and not just sit there wondering what that tweeting noise might be.
this just reminds me of the portlandia skit, "put a bird on it!" :D
I also think this idea is dangerous. If there is a fire I want a god awful noise to go off so we all know not a chirp. The look is cute but in the middle of the night I want to know what I am hearing.
Yeah, that's really cute and I love the design but you know a smoke alarm shouldn't sound pleasant - it needs to wake you up if you're sleeping! I'd have to go with a traditional this round.
Even though its cuter then a traditional one, I'm definitely on team "Smoke alarms should be crazy obnoxious for safety reasons"
That thing will break the first time it goes off because I will smack it after I burn the toast.
really cute!
The article reads: "At the first sign of smoke, the Chick-a-Dee makes the chick-a-dee-dee call of the bird it's named after, with the call's volume increasing and turning into a loud dee-dee-dee sound if smoke thickens." Just like a new ringtone on your phone you'll learn to recognize the sound. Besides it wouldn't have made it on to the market as a smoke detector if it didn't have a sufficient volume + you'll avoid those panic runs when you burn toast since it starts chirping at a lower volume. So just unbunch those painties and relax :)
