I'm always interested in what others are buying. Personally, I gravitate towards items with clean, mid-century lines. This week I decided to step back and watch my fellow deal hunters. I asked three people if I could take a quick picture of what they bought and why. Here's a little about their purchases:
Who: Gabriel
What: Vintage Pepsi Bottle Crate
Why: Gabriel scored this vintage soda crate for $10. He's thinking it will be a nice storage solution for his kitchen. Wooden crates vary in size, quality, and most definitely price. Some vendors charge upwards of $40 for a small square crate! Gabriel was lucky and talked the vendor down from $20. I too have a wooden soda crate — mine's from the old LA Seven Up Bottling Company and I use it to hold my Elvis Costello record collection. They're a great way to mix up your interior, adding a little bit of industrial vintage.

Who: Carol
What: Mounted Antler/Mirror Duo
Why: Carol and her boyfriend wanted a whimsical piece of art. Antlers add dimension to a typically flat space and are currently a hot ticket item. Vendors are selling unmounted racks for $35-90! Carol got this antler/mirror combo for a steal at $30. I'd love to hang this mirror above my dresser and hang my necklaces on the antlers. It would keep my jewelry tangle free and create an interesting multi- dimensional display.

Who: Ashley
What: Wooden Trunk
Why: Ashley just moved into a new apartment that lacks storage. She found this solid wooden trunk and couldn't believe the price, $25. Too good to be true! She wants to put the trunk in her bedroom--a wise decision. This would look great at the foot of your bed, or even as a nightstand if your bed is low. The lines of this piece are simple and timeless, as is the medium brown stain. Trunks of all shapes and sizes are great storage solutions because they're an interesting focal point in a room and cleverly store all your bulky sweaters or guest towels!

What a gorgeous trunk! I am using one as a nightstand myself, in our guest room.

The only issue for using it for storage is that, if there are frequently needed items inside, it's kind of a pain to clear it off. But it's great for seasonal stuff or sentimental things.
Fun post. I love seeing what people buy.
Seeing the wooden trunk has given me an idea. I've had my great grandfathers wooden toolbox in the basement for quite a while now. I think it may be time to bring it up and use it as decor.
Trunks are so useful! Love this one.
Another idea and what I did with mine... I picked up an old trunk that I intended to resell. Ended up using it for storage b/c I was short on space as well. It was kind of an eyesore, though, so I ended up covering the top with a thick foam and this beautiful nature fabric so it's extra seating.
I love shopping around at Flea markets. we ahve an awesome on here in Mobile AL that's open every weekend. It's crazy what goes on inside the DIYer's heads when they're looking at something that make most people gag lol. I get those "put that down, you're embarassing me" looks from my mom all the time, but then she always adores the finished product. Nice Pepsi crate too by the way :)
I also love this post - you should do these more often! Fun to see what people buy, how much they pay and what they plan on doing with it...
I LOVE this post! What a cool idea. I hope to see a lot more of these!!
loving the antlers...and the name gabriel (not creepy). excited for more pictures and more finds next time!
ooooo, i love this.
what great finds - i love seeing what other people score at the flea market!
I love this idea! I always find myself oogling other people's purchases at flea markets; now I can do the same in the comfort of my own home (and from a decidedly less-creepy distance!).
Also, Alison Brislin rules. Love her writing, love her style, love her.
I got myself a wooden crate too over the weekend for just 7 bucks! Planters are a good idea!
I love this post, love haunting the flea markets myself, I'm one step below the 'show up at 6a with a flashlight' type (i.e., I go early but not in my pi's). Once I bought a starburst mirror and an HGTV television producer chased through the market to find me and tried to buy it (I could have made a decent profit but chose to keep it). The other time, it was a bust that looks like Virginia Woolf, every other dealer asked to buy it from me so I finally stashed it in the car so I wouldn't have to keep saying no! *g* Unfortunately, I haven't been to the local flea markets this season, it's one thing I'm really missing but I had to put a moratorium on acquiring things until the renovations are done done done.
i really like the idea of hanging my necklaces from antlers. next weekend, i will be at the flea market. thanks for the idea!
awesome ideas for these various flea market finds! find this a most enjoyable article to read; totally like this person's style of writing, as it makes me want to read more! keep up the good work!
Love the pepsi planter. Always good to see different ways to display flowers/plants other than a vase or pot. Also always enjoy a good before and after pic of a flea market find!
This site is so helpful. I love seeing how people put ordinary things to new uses. Also, interesting to see the price differences from NC to California Wouldn't know that without this site. Keep up the good work. I'm a fan.
It's fun to see the sometimes amazing and sometimes nutty finds that people dig up in urban flea markets. I'm not sure antlers are my thing, but the trunk is pretty cool. And even cooler for that price!
Great post, Alison! It's like peeking at a pre-DIY :)
I definitely like the idea of checking out flea market find ideas. Is this a series? Should be if not. Definitely counting pennies these days.
I like the idea of spray painting the antlers gold! It's helpful to get suggestions from someone with a good eye. I love flea market and thrift store hunting, but sometimes I overlook objects because I can't think of what to do with them. Entertaining and helpful!
