We love seeing toys come out of the closets and put on display. Not only does it help keep your collections refined, but helps little ones see exactly where things go when it's time to pick up. Check out this simple idea that is normally implemented in the kitchen!
A simple magnetic knife holder could do wonders in a children's room when it comes to holding metal items. Although many cars are no longer die cast, we're willing to bet that you have several floating around that are. These strips can be found at most kitchen and bath stores but in our experience are cheapest at IKEA.
Stripe them around a room or just make a small strip of them by an art table, no matter what it's sure to be fun and help kids pick and choose what toys they want on display! Small magnets might also be able to be attached to certain toys (for children old enough to not chew them off), to help them be displayed in the same manner.

genius!
absolutely genius. Stealing this ASAP! I step on one of those dang cars like 10x a day!
Love this! Stealing it!
AH! Brilliant! :)
Rebecca {simple as that}
Love it!
Brilliant! Now I'm GLAD I didn't make it to IKEA yesterday. One more thing to add to the list.
Awesome! Definitely using this in the nursery!
I'm pretty sure the newer hotwheels have plastic bottoms, unfortunately.
I finally have a way to display 200+ keychains!
I'm picturing magnetic knife racks, covered with a cute fabric, with the keychains dangling. Genius!
So simple and smart.
I just put one of these on the wall above my sewing machine! Easy access to scissors, seam rippers, rulers...
Great idea, greendragonflytx! I might have to steal that.
That is brilliant! I am so tired of stepping on all those little matchbox cars!
Now that is a brilliant idea! One to log for the future I think - most of my son's cars are wooden or plastic at the moment, but as soon as he's given a metal one, I know where it's going!
Sadly, it doesn't work with new Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars. These days, the cars are mostly plastic and the little bit of metal present was not magnetic - probably aluminum.
I know because I just tried. I SO wanted this to work.

this would be great for the all thomas trains we've got EVERYWHERE... i think we'll give this a try!
Maybe for all the plastic cars you can just cut up a magnet roll and put a small piece on the bottom, or would the wheels get in the way? Just a thought...
I want to try this!
Yeah, tried this too and it didn't work. Though the cars are really old ones (my husband's and my father-in-law's). The metal's not magnetic. I wish I had tried before screwing the magnetic holder in place. Meh.
@allimarie - please do not glue magnets to the bottom of the cars. It is very dangerous for a child to ingest a magnet!
OMG! Going to do this for my son just as soon as he is old enough to play with the set of matchbox cars he is inheriting from his dad! LOVE.
i just bought the racks and they don't work, the cars won't stick.. different metals ARGH!
I bought some as well, from Ikes, and they don't work! Not even my husbands 1970's matchbox cars will stick. Boo! How are those cars sticking to the magnet in the photo? I don't get it.
I LOVED this idea and bought a magnetic bulletin board to store our MANY cars. Unfortunately, NONE of them stick to a magnetic surface. My guess is that only a very rare few do.
