We used to have a guest room/office that included a twin mattress, which we styled as a "daybed" with bolster pillows. We always had trouble making it look like a sofa until we stumbled across a secret trick. We added striped bedding and, suddenly, it stopped looking like a mattress!
The striped pattern of the bedding subtly defines the edge of the bed and makes it look more like a cushion, less like a mattress. We've seen this trick used in other homes as well, using loose blankets, tailored slipcovers, or pin-striped cushions.

#2 is someone's real home. a nice couple who entered Small Cool this year. I really like what they did with their studio.
#2 was a small cool home? anyone have the link? what an awesome room.
@ duckumu the link is listed under the jump where it says "Sources for Striped Bedding" Under that it says "Photos" and its the 1st link listed "Moo and Joo's Super Comfy".
love the daybed in #4! Any infos on where it could be available? thanks!
I am pretty sure this bedroom was featured in domino as Amanda Peet's daughters bedroom.
Hmm seems like a good idea. Wonder if it would have the same effect on my bigger full-sized mattress?
They are all cute, but they still look like mattresses.
Weren't mattresses originally always striped??? Isn't ticking a 'leftover' from those times?
I'm currently looking for ticking with black stripes (can't find it anywhere) for covering a mattress to give it that old look.
thanks Sardonnicbonnet, but Amanda Peet's daughters bedroom was the room #1, with the pink "funny girl" poster. Do you/anybody else know naything about #4?
thanks!
