I'm in favor of a bit of whimsy and humor in a home and especially so in kids' rooms. Lamps and nightlights serve a function, but don't have to be boring. Here are ten that are out of the ordinary.

We're thinking of picking up this ikea lamp for our nursery. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10218758/
It makes little stars all over the ceiling! I thought it be great for those mid-night feedings.
Oh, I want a white dinosaur lamp too. I feel this could be an IKEA hack...
I've seen a lamp that looks like a jar of fireflies. As I recall, it was under $50. Modcloth has some very cute lamps too!
Most of these lamps, from the looks of it, do not have openings except for where the cord comes out of. That won't work. I recieved a bedside lamp like those listed above but it was a ceramic cat. The very 1st time I plugged it in, the ears started to smoke and burn. No ventalation for the heat to escape from the top. Make sure, if you decide to buy anything like this, that there are holds or an opening for the heat to escape from like the mushroom or latern.
Oh, man. I REALLY wanted the squirrel, but I'm not going to spend $92 on a nightlight. It's molded plastic and an LED.
The dots on the mushrooms "hat" are actually holes to address the problem with overheating. I have the Happle lamp and it's the size of a small pumpkin. I've never noticed it getting hot but then again the sides are far enough away from the bulb that the plastic doesn't overheat. If you're very worried about overheating consider a LED light bulb. They don't get as hot as other types of bulbs.
I love quirky lamps so of course I also have the Mr. P (the shy lamp) whose switch is his ..ahem and the Dog lamp that dims the light when you pet it on the head.
I just ordered the Gnome today (we have a special place in our hearts for Gnomes in our family)… I will report back in if any overheating issues should arise, but hopefully not since it's for a child's room!
I got this assemble yourself trex lamp as a christmas gift a few years ago .. it's one of only a few home decor things that made it in the car on a cross country move a few months ago

love it so much :)
I agree! A dinosaur lamp would be awesome. And I'd watch Jurassic Park in the ambience of the dino's glow....
Now I'm going to have to hack this idea. Thanks for the weekend project.
