Name: Rachel and her daughter Skylar + Lola (the dog)
Location: Silver Lake — Los Angeles, California
Size: 1,500 square feet
Years lived in: 5 — owned
One of my favorite people is leaving Los Angeles. On top of that, she's selling her house, a place that's become practically a second home to me. Like Rachel, this house is full of warmth and personality. Also, like Rachel, it's always ready to welcome you in, a home where there's always a meal or a drink in the offing.
The flow of the house means it's a natural for a party, whether two or two hundred, formal or informal, planned or spontaneous. It's easy to gather around the coffee table in the living room to watch a movie. Set the dining table for dinner while still carrying on a conversation with the cook? No problem. Whether it's piling a group of kids into the cozy kitchen nook for a pancake breakfast or, sitting outside at the bar on the deck with a cocktail, watching the group that's gathered in the spacious kitchen to help cook, or racing for the hot tub as the night cools down, this is a house that is truly always open to gather friends and family (there's even a back house, complete with a ping pong table and a swing, to crash in if the gathering goes into the wee hours). This is one person and one house I'll definitely miss.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Bohemian Glamor. I think the house marries my inner hippie with the side of me that's often in heels and always in nail polish.
Inspiration: Travel, magazines, my family's homes and vacation spots. My mother has the most amazing garden; I wish mine looked like hers!
Favorite Element: The porch and the backyard! I'm always out there in any weather.
Biggest Challenge: Stopping myself from constantly making changes. There's always things I want to tweak! I've got a list of projects a mile long.
What Friends Say: We'll be right over!
Biggest Embarrassment: I haven't gotten around to redoing the bathroom yet.
Proudest DIY: Hmmm, maybe Skylar's room. I put it together — shopped, painted, decorated, hung curtains — in one weekend while she was with her father! I'm actually quite handy with a drill and I make fast decisions.
Biggest Indulgence: The deck furniture, garden furniture and benches were a big splurge two summers ago.
Best Advice: I'm always thinking of my home with people in it. I probably make the most changes in the days or weeks leading up to a big party when I know I'll have a crowd and I want the house to really "work" for what I've planned. The piano arrived just before I threw myself a talent show birthday party!
Dream Sources: I've always wanted one of those hanging bubble chairs for Skylar's room and there's some Italian furniture I'd like to get my hands on.

Love. Love. Love. Great idea with the corner cabinet in front of the tub and the coordinating paint. Love.
More love.

That first photo pulsates with exciting color.
Anyone know where the fabric for the really colorful curtains comes from?
Kris in MD: IKEA!
wha wha wha??!?! AWESOME. that outdoor area!! fire pit, hottub, cushioned banquette AND barstools!??
Thanks! Just looked on Ikea's site and couldn't find it. Is it an older fabric they don't stock anymore? Anyone know the name of it?
Oh my goodness, what a luscious treat for the eyes. Love love love it too. Right up my alley color, mix and style-wise. Thanks for sharing. Hope Rachel's off to some place she'll soon share with AT as well.
Thanks so much for sharing your delightful home with us. Yes, I just used the word delightful, with no regrets!
This is my favorite house tour yet!! Inspiring, incredible, great work!!! I love the the color too.
Quite lovely. You did a fabulous job!
This is one of my favorite houses of all time. HANDS DOWN. It makes my heart race with all the beautiful and vibrant colors... it has so much life and love in it!!!
i too am in love love love. i agree w other comment - house is full of LIFE. def my AT fav so far. thank you for sharing.
O.M.G. This is my dream house! Gorgeous! I love every single thing about it.
The IKEA curtains are Hedda. Discontinued, unfortunately.
the house is gorgeous, and very well lived-in.
i'm not sure i would want to pack up all of those things and move. just for the amount of work that it would take to handle.
What is the odd little orange dog thing on the deck? It keeps popping up.
Wow!!!!! I think I'm in love.
What year was your house built? The built-ins and kitchen tiles are pretty awesome. Must be original, right?
What a gorgeous place. I can't believe a 4-bedder in Silverlake is less expensive than a 2 bedroom worker's cottage here in inner Sydney. Agh! Her real-estate agent's profile photo is hilariously L.A., btw.
Amazing colors. Perfect.
♥♥♥♥♥♥PURPLE RUG IS SO PURPLE♥♥♥♥♥♥
I suppose it is also a remnant?
I could live in this house, it's so beautiful!
Beautiful. Incredibly inspiring. I'm insanely jealous.
Incredible! Very, very nicely done!
like.it.a.loT!
I REALLY love this house, especially the living room and kitchen. Both rooms have a lot of color, and a lot of 'stuff' but it all goes - just my style! And that huge turquoise plant pot in the backyard is so yummy. I could SO live here...
The orange dog is "Puppy" by Finnish designer Eero Aarnio — you can see a lot of them in the House Tour of his home North of Helsinki: Eero Aarnio's Home & Design Studio , Puppy is manufactured by Magis and comes in a range of sizes (4) and colors — even a glowing version!
Stunning scenes here. Love the yellow chair in front of rich green wall. LOVE the curtains. And that groovy green cabinet. This home is SO original and inspiring. Delightful. I want to be your neighbor.
Was just going to ask if those curtains were still available - dang. LOVE the deck setup, esp the bar! Good luck with your new home.
Creative License,
The house was built in 1922 and yes, the kitchen tiles are original.
Lepidoptery,
Yes, you are right, the purple rug was a remnant, also from Linoleum City on Santa Monica Blvd. I did a post on them a few years ago: here.
Thanks!
Abby
love it! it's a little eerie how similar my style is to hers. i have so much of the same stuff in my house!
Get rid of about 8,000 do-dads in this place, and then you'll have something pleasant to look at. Typical, American clutter drives me insane. Other than that, great house and a few really nice items (dining room table/chairs, mid-century chair).
I'm in love! I'm in love! And I don't care who knows it! My fave.
whoa, sidebar...that dude ^ is so angry.
That place is incredible! Thanks for the tour. Amazing!
I love every single part of this house. The outdoor spaces are amazing and love the colors inside.
I love that you have no fear when it comes to color! It's bold and creative but not overdone! Welcoming and inviting! Nice job!
Very, very nice! I love the mix of styles and colors inside and the gorgeous outdoor space. I saved this one to my favorites.
pretty darned adorable.
wait...this house in Silver Lake is only $749,000? What am I doing in San Diego? I need to move.
i am so fond of this one...Super Stylish. Lots of oooomph and just so inviting.
This is just beautiful! What a warm and happy home you've created!
Inspiring! I love the exterior color. I've been hunting for the perfect grey/brown for my own home. Do you recall what color and brand you used? Such a delicious shade of chocolate. Thanks!
Great place, so inviting. Warm, wonderful use of colour and vintage artwork. Will steal a few ideas. . . especially on how to make an ironing board that there's no place else for into something you don't mind seeing!
All the color makes it look so happy!
I. Just. Love. It.
This is the kind of place that is so personal, and seems to have evolved so organically. The kind of place that no one else could have put together and that can not be replicated. Yet it's the kind of place that when guests step inside, they feel at home. LOVE IT.
i LOVE everything about this home - SO MUCH! looks so comfy and lived in yet stylish. has that cool european cottage / country house kind of look..in a good way !
I LOVE the color of this house! I love those green cabinets and warm walls! Love, love, love that yellow chair against the green wall with that painting! I just love this house--the gardens are so airy and serene!
I really love this.
I love it too. Color color color...
Your kitchen is absolutely wonderful.
