Years lived in: 8 months; owned
When Rachel landed her dream job in Berlin — a tenured position as a cellist in a world-class orchestra — it only made sense that she would land her dream apartment, as well. With the news of her contract settling in, and eager to leave her cramped rental situated above a restaurant, Rachel began her search for a permanent home in Berlin, one that would reflect her style and taste, and would have the space to grow with her. After a long search and an even longer renovation period, Rachel's pristinely renovated and freshly furnished Altbau has all the trimmings of a dream come true.
Although she had lived in Berlin for eight years prior, nearly all the furnishings in her previous rental had been temporary solutions (and unfortunately retained the smells of the restaurant below), so Rachel decided to start entirely afresh in the new space. In the intervening year between purchase and move in, while waiting for renovations in her new home to finish, she pondered and plotted her every decorating decision, collecting inspiration from her family, friends, and travels. And slowly, she started making the big purchases both online and in local Berlin shops.
While her furniture buying process wasn't without an impulse buy or two, Rachel made practicality and proportion her priorities, taking time to find the items that would fit both the space and her aesthetic. In addition to stocking up on modern design classics, she also came up with a couple creative solutions to tricky spaces, such as putting several smaller rugs together to form a perfectly sized rug in her narrow and long practice room.
The end result of her work and all this practicality is a calm collection of well-coordinated pieces that lie beneath clouds of beautiful original stucco and ballooning white pendant lamps. Her penchant for clean lines and soft textures gives her home a spare but tactile and cozy quality, and the jolts of burnt orange warm up any inherent coolness in the furniture. Historical details, such as the refurbished (and original to the house) wood-burning stove in the corner of the living room and the hardware on the doors, leap out against bright, white walls and refinished wooden floors; the deep sofa, high-pile rugs, and sheepskin chair are favorite spots for her recently adopted cats, Louis and Maisy.
Visiting Rachel's home a few months after her move, I found her space to reflect the careful consideration that went into her decorating process: every element feels thoughtful, considered. As she continues to settle into her job and home, she has definite plans to further develop and embellish the space, starting with adding curtains and art — and no doubt bringing the entire composition into even greater harmony.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Clean neutral modernism with a dash of color (and Orla Kiely).
Inspiration: Scandinavian interiors and mid-century modern furniture are things that I'm drawn to; I love walnut wood, birch, and white walls. In the flat itself, the natural light and the wood of the floors were a huge inspiration for the direction I wanted the look to take. But overall, I was mostly super practical: I went first for measurements and finding the best fit for the space.
Favorite Element: The incredible amount of space and light in the flat, and the fact that I face a park — being able to see greenery all the way down the whole length of the flat is a wonderful thing.
Biggest Challenge: In planning all of my furniture purchases in advance, finding things that would work both proportionally and with the layout was difficult. The floorplan is quite open — you can see through the entire apartment — so I wanted everything to be very cohesive. And it's actually quite hard here to find furniture that works with high ceilings, and doesn't sit too low to the ground.
What Friends Say: I'm a bit jealous right now.
Biggest Embarrassment: Honestly, it's only so clean and cold because I'm new here! I'm not someone who chooses to have no curtains or artwork! Also, I wish I were able to afford entirely design originals.
Proudest DIY: Well, I'm pretty hopeless, but in the process of moving into this place, I bought a drill and learned how to use it to install the Eames Hang-It-All! I am also quite proud that I built the IKEA Billy bookshelves in the office. The rug in the practice room is in fact several smaller IKEA rugs put together — I couldn't find anything else to fit the space, so this mini-DIY solution works for now.
Biggest Indulgence: Both the orange chair in the music room and the sheepskin chair in the office were equally big indulgences. The sheepskin chair in particular was beyond my budget, but I just couldn't resist!
Best Advice: Buy things you love, but also be practical and buy for specific spaces and uses and measurements. Ideally find the perfect combination of love and practicality.

Very elegant.
This place is phenomenal. The architecture alone blows me away. So much light. So well-appointed.
Wow, love all the architectural details. While I'm not usually a fan of white walls, I think she can add some colour through art and this place will be even better (and it's very nice right now).
And by the way, the cats are wonderful - cats are always important in a space!
Your doors? Your plasterwork? Your windows? Your light? Your terrace? Amazing.
I even covet your doorknob hardware.

I love this place! And I'm curious about the seat pads on the dining room chairs. Were they DIY? Purchased?
It looks very spacious and airy. Which part of Berlin are you in?
Love it - gorgeous apartment.
My only wish - that we had a picture of the bathroom! Having just returned from Paris, my traveling friend and I have been wondering if the showers of European apartments/homes are as small as the hotel shower we endured :)
Be still my heart.
Very cool feature. I want your apartment AND your job!!
Is it a requirement that all house tours feature a photogenic cat? If so, I have TWO photogenic cats. The house, however, needs work.
My house needs work. This house is lovely.
I'm going to spend the rest of the day dreaming about this lovely place - the ceilings, the windows, the floors, the light, the park across the street, the balcony, the wood stove, the doors, the kitchen, the Lamino chair - I love it all!
Congrats to Rachel on a dream job and a dream apartment in one of my favorite cities!
Lovely! The double doors throughout are fabulous. They really contribute to the graciousness of the space.
My home looks very different, but we do have two things in common: I have the exact same credenza, as well as an adorable greyish-calico tabby!
The floors, the ceilings, the hardware, the plaster...BEAUTIFUL! Love it!
The furnishings and decor are a little cold. More color, maybe some art. But all in all really lovely!
Gorgeous! I love it.
absolutely lovely.
OMG! I am so envious! What a beautiful place! I love how fresh and clean it looks. You are so smart to decorate so simply so the apartment can shine.
It seems very nice, but there's hardly anything - at all. I am not advocating for clutter or consumerism, but I see very little in this tour other than an empty apartment (with little exception).
That's not a criticism in design, it just does nothing for my eyes. Still, congrats for the emptiness, as that is a direction many people like - I think it's well done.
Interesting... I think that what some posters may be reacting to as "emptiness" is the absence of artwork. I didn't see this as a negative so much as part of the process of growing into a new space.
My reaction might be coloured by the fact that I just moved house and am in the process of a ground-up re-thinking of how my things work in this new space. I started by having the movers put almost everything in the basement, and I've been slowly bringing things up as I decide where they'll work best. It's taken almost three months to get the furnishings in place, and I'm only just now starting to think about the walls. For me, art comes last, partly because I need to know how it's going to hang relative to the furniture, and partly because I need to live in my rooms for a while before I know what kind of feeling I want to evoke in each of them.
So when I saw Rachel's space, I didn't think "Blech, empty walls." I thought, "Ah, she's still in the blank-slate stage." I'm one of those people who never thinks of a room as being "done", so I really appreciated seeing these rooms in this phase. I'd be very interested in seeing how they look a year, or five years, from now.
those ceilings... gorgeous!
Lovely. Those ceilings.... the door hardware.... the stove.....
Plus, I want that sheepskin chair.
WOW!!!! What an amazing apartment! The architecture.... I am speechless
Congrats! A very beautiful space and place! It's a dream place, really! Everything--from the architecture, to the floors, the windows, doors, hardware--is stunning. I LOVE that you have all that natural light and greenery outside your windows (it too is one of my requirements). I don't think it is sparse or empty at all, your choices are great. And if others did not read, the owner mentions how art and window dressings are normally part of her world but just have not been acquired yet (and art can never be rushed). The space is STILL beautiful without. You're a cellist - bravo! Your cats are also lovely and they are lucky indeed to have you (and this great home). Cheers!
The features of the apartment itself are so gorgeous that this place would have just as much impact, if not more, if it were completely empty. That being said, I like a lot of the choices made with the furniture. well done!
I love, love, love Berlin, especially the Wilmersdorf district. Such lovely residential buildings and a quick walk from the fab Kurfürstendamm shopping. Where is this beautiful architecture?
this place is beautiful. but, my days of salivating over the apartments of rich folks on this website has officially come to a close. i feel like we're praising her good fortune (enough money to buy this place) but not her design aesthetic. goodbye apartment therapy. it was nice while it lasted and i'm sure i'll miss you. but we're done.
Whatever searching, and waiting and renovating you did was worth it! The apartment is fantastic and I love that you used the space as your inspiration. With wonderful results! Floors are stunning... are wide pine boards at all typical in apartments of that age in Berlin? Just a curiosity, they are very rare in this part of the world.
Absolutely one of the nicest apartments I have ever seen. Soooo jealous. Congratulations to you.
Jus beautiful. I too am curious about the seat cushions. Please share where you purchased them. I have seen a couple but they don't appear to be as rich in colour. Are they felt?
Gorgeous house, no matter the design or the furnitures. The cat looks funny, it seems like a queen of this house. lol
Btw, this house also can install a chimney for a wood burning stove? If I get a new house or decorate the house again, I will consider those questions about wood stove
I think the architectural details in the flat are amazing but the design itself leaves me cold. It's very bare and cold and, speaking as someone who knows how cold Berlin can get in the winter, needs something to jazz it up a bit. I think it could be amazing with some more rugs, throws, art on the wall and an injection of colour. But right how, it doesn't really look as if someone lives there.
please, people, do read the text before commenting.
"Honestly, it's only so clean and cold because I'm new here! I'm not someone who chooses to have no curtains or artwork!"
so there.
Gorgeous. I would never leave!
Rachel did a fabulous job of picking furniture that fit the proportions and layout of her home. I hope we come back after she's had time to decorate it the way she likes, I'd love to see what her art and decorative choices are.
My favorite things were the masonry stove (something I have in my dream house- that I will probably never own!), the coffee table (possibly the best Eames coffee table I've seen), the style of the doors (I like how the framing and baseboards are incorporated into the doors), and the Stack-It units in the bedroom and dining room. I'm trying to figure out how to DIY that right now!
It's beautiful! I especially love photo 15, with the sculptural cello cases - that's art too!
A home with cats can never be cold. Congratulations.
OH my, what lovely, lovely bones this home has
The sheepskin chair wasn't an indulgence, that kitchen was. And where are the pics of the bathroom?
BEAUTIFUL!
Gorgeous. Elegant. Lucky to have all those beautiful moldings.
I miss some personality beyond the great taste in furniture, though. A picture or painting on the wall would be so nice. It looks a bit cold and austere in there.
The space and light look so elevating. Just gorgeous in an ethereal to die for way.
The comments really show how many people just look at photos but don't bother to read to get the story or details. Zheesh, before you put in your two cents, read the text so you don't sound redundant.
I think the entire apartment is exquisite and doesn't need a thing added to it. It took my breath away it is so perfect. Rachel, don't listen to those who think space has to be cluttered up to be lived in. Your restraint gives you space to breathe and to be filled with your music.
bklyntgr - do have any idea how hard Rachel must have worked to be a "tenured cellist in a world-class orchestra"? Having a great job that she must have worked her tushy off for since she was a child (think of all those hours of practice) hardly qualifies to be dismissed by you as "good fortune." And as for "rich," I know nothing about Rachel beyond the accompanying text in the story, but it says she lived for 8 years in a cramped space above a restaurant. Does that sound rich to you? Save your sour grapes for some other time.
Heart be still! It's a fantastic space, with beautiful light and architectural details.
Homes are living, breathing entities. They grow and change with time. It would be great to see what happens to this one in the next few years.
Gorgeous apartment. My favorite features are the ceilings. It's a bare though, giving off a minimalist feeling. Would love to see it when there are more personal touches.
Gorgeous!!!! And your cats are adorable.
I think it's great, and I'd love a floor plan to see how it all fits together!
Like many others, I'm interested in the cushions on the dining chairs.
Hi moofle, the seat pads are from a company in Berlin, called Parkhaus Berlin. The colour is Kenia Rot (kenya red). They do mail order, altho I can't promise to which countries.
Sorry, I'm new to this, I thought I could reply indiviually - so that above is to anyone who was interested in the seat pads!
The bathroom has just been re-done as part of the renovations, so whereas I don't know what kind of showers were there before (originally they would have been sharing a toilet with the neighbours in the stairwell!!), I now have a 90cmx90cm shower cubicle and matching tub :)
The really wide pine floorboards are indeed something typical to Berlin, luckily for me! The hallway, music room and bedroom are the original floorboards, the living room and office (where the colour is lighter) have been recently laid as they were too damaged or had been completely taken out. The colour is already deepening tho, I had no idea how quickly it goes!
Hope that answers the main questions. Thanks for all the lovely comments, I'm overwhelmed!
Rachel -- your space is lovely and minimal, well done! I am DYING over that bread box in the kitchen. What brand is it and where did you get it?
The most amazing home I have ever seen! WOW! What awesome inspiration... Congratulations on your beautiful place and your amazing talent, musicians are too kool!
and THIS is why i'm buying an altbau (prewar) apartment in berlin (my hometown)! you just can't find that beautiful architecture (in Jugendstil/Stuck style) here so often and so well preserved.
regarding her decor, i'd love to see the place again in a year or so - after she's settled into it more. that, by no means, takes away from it's stunning-ness right now!
bravo! brava! ;-)
Once again, a beautiful home and thanks again for the seat cushion details!
This place is GORGEOUS! I adore it.
PS: We have wide plank pine floors like this in our home in northern Minnesota. Nearly identical, but ever so slightly more rustic. Hers' are so perfect, I was wondering if they were laminate - I was actually scrutinizing the knots, looking for a repeat pattern. I'm so glad to read that they're real! We installed ours, milled locally, about 7 or 8 years ago. People always love that floor!
While this apartment has breathtakingly beautiful bones, I find all the modern, "minimalist" furniture jarring. No, I'm not arguing for ponderous antiques. But the sources listed were overwhelmingly mass-market (viz. IKEA). Just one item, the Danish sideboard, came from a vintage furniture store. I ache to see furniture and accessories in here that'd be more in character with this lovely apartment's age and scale. Sorry, but I'm among several readers who see the apartment as beautiful but cold...and I don't think the "cold" stems from the white walls.
Oh I could live here so happily. Stunning space. Time will always give your space a more lived in feeling!
Simply stunning!
So serene and beautiful. Well done!
Stunning home. Where did you find the sectional?
Jesus Christ. No place should be this perfect. It's not fair.
I love this place as is with the bare walls and empty space because of the architecture. I also absolutely envy anyone who has a sparse and well edited collection of items. It feels like a gallery-like place but still a home. Personally, I would not dramatically change this place by adding lots of colorful accessories or loaded with art. You bought the place because it's a beautiful space...I think. I hope you add those things sparingly (and lots of love in regards to art) because the home is absolutely stunning already. The space doesn't need a lot of visual stuff to distract the eye.
This is a beautifully light filled flat with views of the park's greenness flooding into every window. Inspiring open spaces and immaculately detailed walls and high ceillings. I would, over time, and as the paychecks continue to roll in, match the space with period appropriate looking furniture instead of eames and ikea, but that's my opinion and may be the opposite of your taste. Thank you for sharing. It's a breathtakingly beautiful place, and I'm very happy for you!
Great taste. Successful partnering of traditional architecture with modern furniture. My ideal apartment and something to aim for.
