There is nothing more frustrating than gutters that are clogged during the fall and then ice-damaged during the winter. It's bad for your house and a nuisance to repair. RainTube, one of Sustainable Industries top green building products of the year, will not only alleviate these problems, but also assist in a rainwater collection system...
RainTube is a lightweight perforated material that fits snugly into the body of a gutter to keep debris high up out of the water where it can dry out quickly. Rainwater is scrubbed clean as it quickly passes through the RainTube and to a downspout. In addition to preventing clogged gutters, it helps prevent snow and ice buildup and can even be fitted with an optional heating element.
RainTube will not deteriorate and is virtually invisible when in place. It is made of 100% recycled HDPE (old milk jugs, etc), is completely recyclable and comes with a lifetime warranty. According to the company RainTube is one of only eleven companies worldwide to achieve a Cradle to Cradle Gold Tier Certification.
The company also makes rain barrels, BarrelMan, out of salvaged and recycled lumber with a waterproof liner - a decent alternative for people who'd prefer the look of a wooden barrel over plastic.

wonder if this stuff is any different than the perforated drainage tubes they sell cheap at home depot...
well, surely the gauge of the line is smaller. Its sad that this isn't something that I can swing down to the home improvement superstore and pick up today.
Secondly, I doubt the common black irrigation tubes are made of recycled materials. I could be wrong though.
As the distributor for RainTube in NJ and Delaware, I can tell you that it is most certainly different than the drainage tube found in HI stores. Number one, you are correct that it is a different size than the regular drainage tube. It will not fit into a 5K gutter unless you cut it down and then it is subjected to twisting and other adverse effects caused by expansion and contraction. This will delete the most important aspect of Raintube, the completely closed channel that keeps water flowing unabated with in the channel. Also, it is estimated that the drainage tube would hold up about five years in the harsh sunlight and baking effect of coming off a roof. I am working on a redesign that could give you a DYI install option. If interested send me an email at donaldciesielski@yahoo.com
