When I let my friend know I was taking a little trip to a ranch in Northern California this past weekend, she smartly suggested I watch the original The Parent Trap while I was there — reminding me of that gorgeous Carmel home that belonged to Susan and Sharon’s father, Mitch. Of course Haley Mills, Maureen O’Hara and Brian Keith are beyond wonderful and entertaining, but I couldn’t help but hitting pause every few minutes to admire the sprawling set.
I love how the set designer chose to add California-inspired citrus pops when designing the “home” — check out those great orange pots in the kitchen, or the bright pillow against that incredible headboard and grey-blue paint in the bedroom.
Luckily, Julia over at Hooked on Houses shares the enthusiasm for this Disney classic and she takes an in-depth look at the sets of the original and the remake.

Just watched this the day before yesterday....Funny how this was one of my fav movies growing up. BUT now, all I could do is notice the design, furniture, tiles, etc....
What a wonderful post! I just watched this for old-times' sake when it was on tv the other night, and it's such a great movie. When I was younger, I so desperately wanted that room that the girls shared, but now I'm lusting after the big, open kitchen and the low-lying couches all through the house!
I.LOVE.THAT.MOVIE!
That house has been a favorite of mine for as long as I can remember!
Never seen it, but I'm loving these pics too. I'll have to figure out how to get a copy of this flick. Thanks to you and your friend Julia. Heading over to Hooked...
Best movie ever. I can recite it line for line, and was seriously shattered when I realized Hayley Mills wasn't my age...
Anything to do with the Parent Trap must be good! (In my book it IS). I loved the movie, Hayley Mills and even as a kid loved the decor of the California Ranch. What a combination of perfect elements!
Not only was this my favorite movie when I was growing up, I actually own it! (I swear, I bought it for my kids....... )
When watching this as a kid, I wished I lived in that house....well, that and the Brady Bunch house.
Ditto the love for this film!! I always wanted that bathroom - it's HUGE! And the wire-frame bed - love!
I always love seeing that house! Thanks for spotlighting it here-- it made my day.
OMG I just inherited that same wrought-iron chair that's in the foreground of the bedroom photo (we only see the top here, not the seat). Can anyone identify it for me??
I always wanted to live in the Family Affair condo.
This is one of my all time favorite movie homes. Even when I was young, I obsessed over that house. Thanks for the post!
I love this! That fireplace is unreal... even if it is fake!!!
my favorite childhood movie!!!
There's a little bit of Ranch but a whole lot of Hollywood Regency goin' on there...
Much like the treehouse in Swiss Family Robinson, I always wanted to live in this home
I have loved this film ever since I was a little kid. I've always wanted Susan's bed frame along with Sharon and Susan's clothes! And I just watched this movie 2 days ago. What a coincidence!
I just watched this the other week too! It was the first time I'd seen it as "an adult" and I was SWOONING over the design. So good.
I must have watched that movie dozens of times growing up, and I always loved that house :) Thanks, you made my day!
Oh my god-awesome post!
Can you do a post on the beautiful house from the movie "The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom" It's a fun 60's movie with Shirley Maclaine.
She has these fabulous murals and paintings all over her english home. It is one of my favorite movie homes and would be a great inspiration to AT readers.
I am ENAMORED with that bed.
Oh, so love this. How can anyone NOT love this house and Mitch. Esp. loved the pool and bar :)
Another all time favorite, definitely post worthy: the evil doer's (ala the VanDamn's) house in North Dakota in North by Northwest--truly magnificent.

I have loved this movie my entire life. I also own it. Don't even have kids. Just love it.
LOL! When everyone started painting rooms blue again, my initial reaction was, "Oh, that's SO 'Parent Trap!'" I didn't have a conscious memory of any particular room, but the blue drew me back to the era of my very-early-childhood.
