- Inspiration for my palette:
- Winter in Toronto can be cold and harsh; I needed a little summer to go with my modern furniture. I've collected all shades of green mid-century pottery for years, and orange just looks so good with it. That's my favorite color combo right now! The Crate & Barrel rug was just right. Since this room is my office and also my crafting "lab," I wanted something that made me as happy as possible.
- Colors used in my room
- Primarily orange and green, with accents in blue, purple, and yellow
- Tips for using color successfully
- I always keep the walls and the big pieces neutral and add pops of brights (or whatever) to freshen it up. That way, you can change out the accessories and completely change the room's mood without spending a fortune.

I don't know what I like more, the great way you've used colors or that your cute little dog is in that box! :)
Thanks, Tracy333! He's a rescued Westhighland White Terrier and his name is Bandit. I do a lot of antiquing, and came across this old crate that was the perfect dog-bed size!
Ooooh I loves me some Heywood-Wakefield! Is it vintage or new?
Also love the colors -- I think they're so fitting and beautiful for a retro kind of look.
MrsWj, the HW is vintage, but in really good shape. I've recovered the chair several times, but left the original upholstery underneath. The armchair is also vintage that I had recovered in tan velvet.
You did an awesome job lwyrgrl! We recently bought a pair of $10 thrift store chairs that we got recovered too. I love doing that, and would get more done if we could afford it. :o)
Love it. Best yet.
I know it's the least "exciting" element of the room but...what paint color did you use on the walls? It's exact white I've been looking for!
Where are those shelves above the blonde desk from?
The use of colors in this room make my eyes happy.
Great summery choices and I love your pottery collection. I'm choosing summery colors for my new apt here too, which is way further north than I've ever lived. I could drive to Canada in 3-4 hours, so your validation of my instinct was lovely to see.
Favorited even before looking at other pics. Best shelf brackets I've seen in a long while. The blue frame is SO "no'; can't fault anything else. This room really needs to zoom up to the top or near it (favorite wise).
ahilaryb, it is a nice warm white without too much yellow in it. It's Behr's "Parchment."
I had to click on this pic right away, that is a wakefield desk as well right? beautiful!
All is so delightful...let's sit ,have tea and talk about your latest sewing project.
The colors all come together so well. I like the material choices on the chairs. Smart not to take the original off.
SO cute, though I agree about the blue frame--it looks too much like painter's tape. Otherwise, it's such a cheerful room and I'd love to spend days there.
Is that McCoy pottery? I love this place so much, and it would be so much fun to meet a fellow sewist. Did you make the curtains?
White vase looks to be McCoy; sure hope it wasn't painted.
oops, my bad. That was Jill's room with the white McCoy.
The shelf above the desk is just Ikea brackets with a plain wood plank from the hardware store! I wanted something natural looking, and that did it. The curtains are also Ikea.
The desk and chair are vtg Heywood-Wakefield, gotten for a steal! The green pottery is mostly a mixture of 50's and 60's McCoy and Haeger, but one of the yellowish ones is my prized 40's Rookwood. The big green one in the center and a small one on my desk are Canadian pottery called Blue Mountain that I've never seen in the States. The sewing machine is my grandmother's 1973 Singer -- the one I learned to sew on and later inherited.
Yeah, I'm thinking of repainting the bulletin board frame, it came out a little bright. Back to green? Or maybe a darker purple?
Dark maroon would be one for the b.board. Or dark grape. Not purple.
Love, love, love this room. Regarding your sewing machine, I have one that is almost identical, that my mother purchased new in 1959, so I am thinking that your version may be much older than 1973?. Not loving the monitor in front of the window, just a pet peeve of mine as I don't like to see windows blocked out. And Blue Mountain pottery!. its just the best, and can be found for a song on craigslist, garage sales, etc. Check out their "mocha" line, its so ugly but it grows on you!
Love your room. It's cheerful, charming, and it looks like one could get some work done there. I collect McCoy, too, and it's nice to see it used to such dramatic effect.
In defense of having a television or a monitor in front of the window, it's the best place for it from the standpoint of viewing. Otherwise, light from the window would be shining onto the screen. And while I agree getting the optimal light from a window is desired, not all views from windows are great.
Very warm and happy. Nice!
I love the carpet!
