Color Inspiration: When I was little I used to stare at old black and white photographs and try to imagine what the colors had been. When I grew up I found I liked to stare at white walls and try to imagine what the colors should be.

Color Inspiration continued: Every room in my house is saturated with color. The dining room is my favorite room, though, both because it's the most dramatic and because the interaction of light with the rich, orange paint causes the color to change literally by the hour, from dusk to dawn.
The color palette of the dining room was inspired by a water color still life featuring an orange tea pot, a light blue vase and a red apple resting on white lace, arranged on a black table.

Color Tip: In each room I start with a simple pallet, such as two complimentary colors, and let it evolve organically over time. This helps the color in a room seem genuine and unregimented.

I've always been hesitant about orange, though I love the color, because I fear that it would look Halloween-y. But this room doesn't suffer from that problem at all, looks bright and warm.
I love how dramatic the stairs look as well as the overall cushiness of the velvety upholstery. I gave this a thumbs up before I discovered Randolph was from Salt Lake City, where I also happen to live. Good luck Randolph!

I'm as surprised as everyone else about the success with which you've used orange. It's pleasantly softer than I'd imagine, and I think having dinner in this room would be sumptuous. This was, in the best sense, a real eye-opener.

I think you suffered a bit by being posted early in the competition - I noticed there was a bit of inflated voting later on - I think probably because as more people got involved, more people were checking the contest and voting. Your room is lovely and I am sad that you did not make the final 16.
I LOVE this! I love the black and white accent pattern on the side of the staircase so much that I wish there was more. The blonde wood on the stair rails and steps disappears/blends into the orange of the wall and I think it would do wonders for "anchoring" or grounding the room and creating more depth if you were to paint just the rail and the the tops of the steps black (leaving the bases white as you have them) to tie in with the pattern panels. But other than that this is perfect!
Just wanted to edit my comment above and say black would look good on just the tops of the steps (the rails might be too overwhelming with the black dining room table).
