Working with What You Have: Re-purposed Corner Shelf

When Jeffrey and Mercedes moved, they discovered their furniture didn't quite fit the constraints of their new apartment. Instead of purchasing new pieces, they looked for ways to make their furniture more functional. One of their successes was the transformation of a bulky corner shelf into a modern wineglass storage system.

Many of us can relate to a post-move desire to purchase furniture that works with the new floor plan but we are often constrained by financial realities. For Jeffrey and Mercedes, this wineglass shelf was an obvious solution. The couple's passion for wine has led to quite a collection of bottles and drinking glasses that needed a place in their new home. Instead of saying good-bye to their old corner shelf they were able to transform it to fit their needs and, more importantly, their space.

Their shelf make-over began by locating the metal hardware needed for the underside of each shelf. After testing IKEA metal stemracks on a previous under-counter installation, Jeffrey decided not to go that route as a few of the glasses slid off the racks and broke. On a mission to find flat glass racks that fastened on both sides, the couple finally stumbled upon these chrome under-counter stemracks at Pier One. Combining the need for glassware storage with an old corner shelf resulted in a sleek new piece of furniture that provided functionality without breaking the bank.
