Location: Mexican Caribbean
Link:Hotel Akumal CaribeDescription:I, too, like to think I've traveled a lot. I tend to be very picky about where I stay -- that is NOT to say I need luxury or expensive hotels or something like that (I usually can't afford it!). But I know that where you stay is sometimes as important as the location itself. I always try to seek out a place that reflects the people and style of the area......I discovered Hotel Akumal Caribe several years back -- before the Riviera Maya became the new "hot spot." It is about 60 minutes south of Cancun (about 20 minutes south of Playa del Carmen). Fortunately, this place seems to have not lost its old world, intimate feel. The family has owned the land for many, many years and they are working hard to not sell out to a big all-inclusive resort (which most of the area is overrun with). Part of me wants to keep this place all to myself, but I also know the word needs to get out so that it stays busy enough so it can survive.
You have three options for accommodations at Hotel Akumal Caribe. There is a little four story hotel (very quaint), there are bungalows (where I always stay) and there are a few condos to rent (good for families or two couples). All of the accommodations are simple, yet reflect the style of the area and the Mayan people. It is on the prettiest, most peaceful beach that I have ever visited. Word has it all those Corona commercials were filmed here (you know... the ones looking out over turquoise water? with no words spoken... just the sound of the tiny waves?). Just take a look for yourself.
There is a wonderful restaurant (Lol-Ha) and bar right on the beach. I am a total foodie and I can assure you this food is amazing. There is also a little town here with an ice cream store, a little fish restaurant (they will cook up the fish that you catch), a bakery run by some ex-pats, a little yoga studio and a dive shop. The Mayan people are among the sweetest I have ever encountered.
It's great because the rates go down in April to a very affordable rate (but the rates are not bad the rest of the year either).
I hope you are able to visit someday and maybe some of your readers too! Hotel Akumal Caribe is just one of those places I can never get out of my head and I am always trying to convince myself we need to plan another trip down there!
