Location: Deqin, China
Lodging: Tashi's Mountain Lodge
Description: We were living in Kunming, China – which is in the southwestern-most province, Yunnan – when we decided to head up north and explore the border between Yunnan and Tibet. We got on a bus in Shangri-la and took an old caravan route on the mountainside to Deqin; looking down on tumbled jeeps and the roaring river (while an old Tibetan man gripped our seat)...
Eight long hours later, we finally crawled out of the bus where we were met by a friendly gal from Tashi's Mountain Lodge which is located between Deqin City and the best place to view the sacred mountain Kawa Karpo – Feilaisi. They welcomed us to their newly converted farmhouse with a large kettle of tea and gave us a tour.
Situated on the cliff side, Tashi's is located in Reringkha Village and is a quaint, solar-powered inn with beautiful, ornately painted walls and thatched log roofs paired with crisp white linens and rice paper lanterns. That night we were the sole guests on the 2nd floor until an unexpected visit from bats moved us into a lower room, which was a happy surprise as we got to enjoy the different wall murals.
The next morning we head out just before dawn to watch the sunrise over the Kawa Karpo range and then proceeded to hike 8 hours to the Yubong Village where we spent the night recouping under stars that looked close enough to touch while sipping down yak butter tea. The next day we hiked uphill past prayer flags for another 4 hours to the Holy Waterfall of Yubong, where Tibetan pilgrims gather to pray.
By nightfall we had trekked back to Tashi's where we found – aside from the welcomed kettle – they were completely booked, save the separate cottage that they had kept aside for us. After an arduous trip and freezing shower, sleep came quickly and the next morning we rode back to Shangri-la filled with memories (and rocks in our shoes).
