Description: Three years ago, my partner and I escaped to Belize on our honeymoon and absolutely fell in love with the country, the landscape and the people! Our favorite part had to be our stay at Ek' Tun, tucked deep into the rainforest of the Playo region. With only 2 cabana, no electricity, the most amazing landscape and a rainwater fed lagoon and well, it's an eco-lodge before the term became chic...
Run by a US ex-pat who cooks the most amazing meals and serves the freshest coconut water in an open air room where the river, forest and mountains are your view, it's certainly off the beaten path. You have to yell across the river and a boat comes and picks you up and transports you to the 'lodge'. The cabanas utilize the traditional thatched roof technique (which Phyllis, the owner, helped to build). You can spend your days tubing on the river, hiking the nearby trails and caves or you can arrange a guided tour of the ancient Mayan caves and ceremonial sites. While we visited the beaches and reefs of Belize too, the lasting impression we have is of the rainforest, the caves and Ek' Tun.
