Outside of dust bunnies and stray socks, it's amazing what you can store under your bed! There are entire storage systems designed to stow beneath your mattress, and depending on the height of your bed that space can mean the difference between having "enough" storage in your home and not.
In my time, I have stored everything from linens in rubbermaids to guns under my bed. (Gasp, I know! I'm in Texas, folks, and my fiance has an antique western shotgun...we don't have kids and it's not loaded!) When I was living in 250 square feet in San Francisco, the space was truly prime real estate. I'm not sure I would have been able to keep many of my pieces of artwork were it not for storage beneath the bed.
I'm currently blessed with large closets, and so there's really very little under there. Outside of those dust bunnies and stray socks, that is. I know that as we settle into this home and grow as a family, that space will become more and more valuable.
What do you have under your bed? Dare I ask?

Z2 iPod Dock and Wi...
Out of season clothes in rubbermaid tubs.
I have wire baskets from Ikea covered in purple material. they hold my extra bags, bathing suits, and undergarmets!! I also have my tool box under the bed. ah, studio living
A couple under-the-bed plastic totes that hold spare linens and some out-of-season clothes.
Big plastic boxes with wrapping paper, ribbon, etc.
Winter clothing, but hopefully I can get some spring cleaning done and reduce the amount.
My bed is lifted up on inexpensive risers from Home Depot (smaller and easier on the toes than the cinder blocks I used in college.) We rent a 1000 sq ft apartment in Seattle.
In this spacious cavern I store disassembled kitchen chairs, sleeping bags, plastic drawers containing my hat collection and extra bedding, rarely worn shoes, and ski clothing.
Who knows? There isn't supposed to be anything, but every time I sweep under there I pull out a pile of "lost" clothing, too many dust bunnies to count, and a few stray toys. I'm thinking about taking off the dust ruffle. I thought they were supposed to keep the dust out, but instead I think it's pulling it in. I could be confused about its intended purpose though.
Maybe next time I'll make a tiny farm scene, like in the photo. Which I think is beyond adorable, by the way.
Drawers full of sheets, towels and clothes. We went out of our way to purchase a captain's bed for the extra storage and to never have to deal with creepy under-bed dust bunnies, and feng shui be damned, we love it.
My bed -- out of season clothes and blankets. Under the guest bed -- all the stuff I don't need, but can't part with (artwork from college projects, random empty frames, other random stuff.
I used to keep art under my bed as well! In the past it was where I kept old school notes, broken down boxes from electronics (I thought for some reason I needed to keep them), and extra sheets for when I had friends over.
Now I have extra sheets and blankets in bins, some suitcases, snowboard gear, and a little space I keep empty where my dog likes to curl up and hide.
Since it is a captain / bookshelf style bed, I use the drawers under my bed as a dresser... One wicked bed that never needs a box spring!!!!
A herd of dust bunnies
boots, rolled up area rugs, probably some dust...
Shoes, many shoes.
My dog Poki sleeps under our bed at night. She has a cozy safe little den under there. I love listening to her snore.
we have a bed frame under our bed. Also stray shoes that get kicked under there if I'm too lazy to put them away.
I used to store tubs of spare linens, a clothing drying rack and folding beach chairs (for fire escape sitting) under my bed. I recently bought the Webster bed from Room and Board and couldn't bear to clutter up it's clean lines with a bunch of junk under the bed so now there's nothing. And since there's nothing, I can vacuum under there much more efficiently so there aren't even dust bunnies!
Nothing. I need to sweep/dust mop at least once per week, so storage there would be really inconvenient.
Gun cases (the guns are in a safe) and our super-large duffel bags that we pack in when we travel. Unfortunately, my cycling shoes always wind up way under my bed, too.
@Alahoop I'm the same way. I prefer to have nothing underneath the bed. I could be all fancy and say stuff about chi, and feng shui and yadda yadda but the truth is I HATE how dusty it gets under there. I hate dust in general and anything that is stored under there gets dusty. It's far easier to do a quick sweep and mop when there is nothing underneath there.
I have a bedskirt on my bed since I don't have a good frame and you can see my ugly boxspring without it. But the bedskirt seems to just draw things underneath there. I'm thinking of taking mine off too.
A box of spare bed linen. And our kitty, sometimes.
Let's see... A rubbermaid of old toys that I still like to look at, a cardboard box of some random books and junk, half-full bottles of shampoo, body wash, etc, a rubbermaid of feminine products, vitamins, and bath products, my shocking pink tennis shoes, my nasty old work boots, and a LOT of white hair from both the dog and rabbit.
A cat(& dog) bed, 2 square wicker baskets with seldom needed clothes inside,a rubbermaid stool, a scale, a hand vac (plugged in and charging) and, in the day time, comforter & pillow.
All of it out of sight and very handy.
Rubbermaid of guest linens, my husband's antique munitions box full of painting supplies from college, our tent, a old decaying version of Risk and other board games we never play, lots of dust, underpants and books that get kicked under. Oh, and my in-laws' air mattress that we borrowed two years ago. They'll be in town this weekend so thanks for the reminds.
cases for my instruments.
I really like having nothing under the bed (except the cat, who doesn't seem to care if anything is or isn't under there with her), but It's always a struggle. It's such a convenient place to put everything when you're cleaning up in a hurry--the urban dweller's basement. Right now, there's nothing under there but a spare box of cat litter.
I noticed that people were commenting about the dust ruffle/bed skirt drawing in more dirt under the bed and wanting to get rid of it. The way to get rid of it AND camouflaging your box spring is to just put a fitted sheet on the box spring. Hope that tip helps! :)
A steering wheel. I live in an RV and sleep in the loft area over the cab).
I'm lucky enough to have a adequately-sized closet, so I have enough storage for my stuff -not that I have a whole lot. (Im a teenage minimalist!) ...I had to think for a moment, but I have a pair of old earbuds, a remote to my stereo, and a book under my bed.
A few storage containers, probably some lost clothing and usually a cat or two. Our younger cat has actually torn a hole through the cotton on the bottom of the box spring and crawls around under there. One weekend soon he's going to find his little hide-away closed back up.
Our bed has drawers built in on either side. Such "storage beds" are not easy to find, but they exist.
clearly labeled bins with everything from old paperwork [middle] to out of season clothes, office supplies. looking at prices for captains beds but ouch!. as soon as i finish a few other projects higher on the need to do list, i will build custom boxes out of 3/4" ply and purchase nice doors for them to increase badly needed storage [very old house, only 1 closet]
Nothing. I'm very allergic to dust, so there is an expanse of meticulously maintained hardwood floor underneath our Room and Board Parson bed (which doesn't use a box spring - just a mattress). Al floor space must be easy to clean in our house.
A dog. She doesn't get in the bed, or in her bed. That's where the cat sleeps, silly. She really likes her den under the bed.
my closet.
http://www.beyondthestoop.com/2011/11/house-tour.html
my 7x8 bedroom with no REAL closet just wasn't going to work, so we improvised and lofted the bed! i still have to duck down to get in it, and use those cheap battery-powered push lights under there (because we have no outlets in the bedroom either), but hey... a closet is a closet.
cheap rent in a good neighborhood in the NYC metro area is tough to come by, and if that's what i have to sacrifice to save a few hundred bucks every month, i'll take it!
The vertical blinds I took down and replaced with curtains. Only place they fit!
Lots of dust, lost bobby pins and coins. Just an educated guess.
Dust bunnies. I need to sweep more.
I don't like to keep things under the bed but I live in a small apartment so I must.
Boxes of family photos & negatives. Even though many have been scanned I cannot give up the artifacts and it is safe storage here (dry).
My large flat box of wrapping paper and ribbons, etc. for gift wrapping.
That's it, not too bad. But I would LOVE to have what the pic shows under my bed. So cute!
Under my bed there's an antique trundle bed with no mattress that I inherited from an aunt. It had a straw filled mattress when I got it, but my cat loves sleeping on it, and it got so gross I threw it out. I keep a blanket over the bedsprings now, so the cat will be comfortable. It's his special place. Also, lots of cat hair.
Under a guest bed I have all my wrapping paper and wrapping supplies.
A huge maternity pillow that I LOVED but my husband hated was stored away 7 years ago. Not sure why I keep it but it was wonderful when I needed it. My husband's shoes and anything I'm hiding from my children, right now it's the stuff for their easter baskets. I once stored some glass candle sconces but broke one when I was vacuuming, so I don't suggest ever storing anything breakable uncovered under your bed.
Art from college is stored under another bed in a huge well-made box that used to hold foam-core sheets. Frame shops and art supply stores will sometimes give you one if you ask.
I have a dog bed and a basket full of afghans. It's an "architect" bed, so you can really see everything that's under there. I hadn't considered this when I got rid of my skirted frame. I had to find new homes for so many things! Wrapping paper, hand weights, air mattress...etc.
Earplugs. My BF uses them and frequently loses them. We joke about them reproducing there and also starting colonies in hotels when we travel.
Two Rubbermaid bins of off season clothes, though I really need to go through and ditch a lot of that! Under the guestroom bed is the extra leaf to our dining table. We still have a lot of space (bought a house, now working on growing our family) so I'm sure we'll add more things under the bed as we go.
I recently built us a new bed ala Ana White, and I specifically made sure I kept 7 inches of clearance on the sides so that the boxes would still slide under. (Well, and it looked better than having it almost at the ground too, though it did end up raising the mattress a little.)
I remember that my mother always kept her wedding dress (all boxed up) and our extra dining leaf under their bed, plus a couple other things, I'm sure.
what's not under my bed is more the question...there is a tub of keepsakes, 2 tubs of seasonal clothing, fishing poles, camp mats, my husbands hunting bow, and a dozen or so stacked paintings with no where to hang. we are seriously in need of more storage space! when we move into our new home this summer, i seriously hope to have nothing, NOTHING under there (for the first time ever).
Nothing, other than the occasional dust bunnies. Long time ago, I tried to store stuff in a plastic container but I could not find any that was "flat" enough to fit under my bed (my box spring and mattress are on a metal bed frame). Although my current house lacks closet space, I have hardwood floor in my bedroom (covered only by an area rug in front of the bed [so that my dogs don't slip when jumping on/off the bed]) I am glad I don't store anything under the bed. I like to sweep the dust bunnies out (and wet-swiffer) on a regular basis and it is much easier this way.
my big round excercise hula hoop and i'm sure it's dusty...it must be. ;)
A ton of clothes in rolling storage bins, though hopefully this year's round of Spring cleaning will help fix that.
Two closet doors that we removed from our rental closet to get more space; luggage; and lots and lots of dog hair :)
My cat uses it as a handy storage for all her toys, and it cohabits with our common collection of dust bunnies. There might be a couple of books or two as well.
My living room :) I dream about having storage space under the bed, but since we have a lofted bed above out studio, the only place to stash stuff is under the couch. Every inch counts!
*our, not out. Oops!
Plastic tubs in storage under my bed. A friend of mine has a fully operable, sometimes actually operating, vintage replica of the Disneyland monorail set up under his bed.
Nothing at all. I hate cleaning above all things, but I am a cleaning freak, so I keep nothing at all under my bed, to make it easier to vacuum. I'd better have a minimalist closet and few shoes that have to move those heavy storage bins each week, when I clean.
My dog sleeps under the bed & sometimes she takes a toy or treat under the bed. Once she stole an avocado from the kitchen counter & I found the pit & peel under there.
nothing
The floor! :)
Our bed is directly on the floor, bad I know.
Carpet?
We moved from a large house in MI to a small beach house in FL. The bed is on risers, so underneath is all our luggage, totes, etc. and in the luggage is all our 'cold weather' clothing we wear when visiting our 'up north friends'.
I don't really follow fung shui but two principles of it i do know have turned out to be true in relation to beds
1. a mirror directly facing your bed makes it harder to sleep.
2. stuffing things under your bed makes it harder to sleep. - i've discovered this recently when my boyfriend moved into my tiny apartment and we needed another storage space..there's sooo many things under there. i bothers me :(
Can't wait to empty out the space under my bed.
--Risers from Target to fit all of this:
--All of my moving boxes for my nest move
--Rubbermaid full of out of season shoes
--Rubbermaid full of high school memorabilia
--All of my Hooded Sweatshirts stuffed inside of the infamous blue IKEA bag
--IKEA basket filled with socks and leggings
I'd love to one day have nothing under my bed.. But, for now it will have to make do. I'm a college student living in Chicago and my bedroom is 7'x10' .....AND... it has NO closet!!
I have nothing under my bed currently, but I also don't have my "final" bed (twin size bed in a room large enough for a king!). Luckily, I could store under it since it is a daybed and I don't have the secondary mattress that would normally be stored under it, so more than plenty of height.
Sports equipment: 2 pairs of skis, ski poles, 2 pairs of ski boots, softball bats, balls, and gloves, yoga mat, backpacks.
We also have a couple of mirrors in the room - no trouble sleeping yet. :)
Sweaters and all of my extra (rarely used) bedding in vacuum bags! I cleaned out the top of 2 large closets and vacuum sealed them and shoved them under the bed. Crammed a few pieces of luggage under there too. Vacuum bags for the win!
With a 13 month old, it's not our typical fodder. A few binkies (she never really took to these...), ripped off pages from a few "lift the flap" books, and all of the wires that are required for bedside electronics but are best left out of the hands of little ones.
Moved into a MUCH MUCH smaller house/main floor this past weekend. So it used to be nothing under my bed, now it's... artwork that doesn't really fit my decor anymore but I can't bear to part with- disassembled kitchen table, extra curtain rods, picture frames, etc. I'm actually surprised at what fits, because it's an Ikea Malm bed.
Nothing's under the spare room bed. The master bedroom captain's/platform bed has two drawers. In the drawer under my side of the bed are our gardening clothes. In the drawer under my husband's side of the bed are his pajamas, CPAP supplies, and shorts.
A few bits of trash that wiggled their way under (and now I can't reach them).
Our fireproof box containing important documents.
Quilts and other large blankets, folded and in storage bags (they don't fit in the linen closet).
An extension cord so there's a way to plug things in on the other side of the bed. ;)
My large portfolios from Art School ...and many, many tennis balls that our Jack Russell, Bonsai, loves to shove under there and bark at because he can't retrieve them.
One of my dogs likes sleeping under the bed, so there's nothing under there except for the occasional tennis ball and the book or magazine that slid down. Even dust bunnies are rare - it seems he cleans them up just fine.
We gave a three bedroom and NO closets.
So there's miscellaneous items under our beds: photos, vip documents, school papers, suitcases, home exercise equipment, sunday shoes, secret kids presents, and anything my partner can't be bothered to put away.
Sorry that should read:
We have three bedrooms and NO closets.
