Unplggd reader John wrote in to give the following advice: Watch for old record cabinets. They're often of a convenient size and can be reworked to house modern media components.

I've always loved by old typewriter table (seen above) but it was hardly working as a TV stand. The search for a suitable replacement--something movable, not too deep, that would enable me to hide wiring and components--was harder than I thought it was going to be. Then I found this walnut record cabinet on eBay for just over $40.

After removing the album dividers and adding wheels and interior shelf, it works perfectly for our small room. The gold strip of album categories ("Male Vocalists," "Dance Music") is a nice reminder of the piece's original use.
