We can't stop looking at this photo. How delightful is this small and cozy reading corner?
The two small benches with cushions really make the space. They almost look like two halves of a crib. The wall-mounted book display, small desk lamp and storage box underneath the table (a great place for small feet to rest) all work to create a cozy feeling. Our only addition would be to place a small area rug underneath.

I wonder if those chairs are comfy?
Very cute!
Would love to know where the benches came from! So cute!!
From the perspective of the child, the bench seats are too high (their feet would dangle) and hard with rigid backs. The light is poorly directed. The bookshelf is also set too high because most of the books are out of reach (I can imagine a child climbing onto the chair or table to try to reach one of the upper level books). Whoever designed this would benefit from a little research into early childhood development. This may please the aesthetic values of an adult at first glance, but this is not a well-designed space.
This is adorable! While I agree about the design maybe not being entirely child friendly, maybe the parents don't want every book accessible at all times (I have 2 year old twins so I know that can be an issue).
I have to agree with the previous comments.. although it *looks* cute - my first thoughts were:
- can little ones actually reach any of those books without standing on the furniture?
- are those benches really comfortable?
In terms of functionality I'd go with cushions/bean bags on the floor and bins to hold the books. Or wall shelves mounted much lower.
Daddy, will you get that book for me? Daddy... Daddy... thump.
Take the cushions off the benches and throw them on the floor. Move the bookshelf all the way down to the floor so the kids can actually get at the books.
I can't see either one of my kids getting all cozy with a book in that area. Looks pretty but lacks functionality.
This is a very sweet space. I do agree with the other comments about its functionality though. It depends on the ages of the children using it. All of the ABC books on the shelf imply that it's been designed for toddlers and it does seem a bit impractical for that age group.
I'm setting up a reading nook for my kids right now in their shared bedroom. It will have a rug underfoot, a big armchair, some cushions on the floor, some wall-mounted book storage (either book slings or a unit like the one above) that the kids can reach themselves, and some bins or baskets for the rest of the board books.
Would love to know where is the bookshelf from?!
My immediate thought was like others here, that those benches can't be that comfortable. Everybody wants comfy snuggly places to read a book, not a bench! And how can mom and dad snuggle up with little ones in a nook like that? I agree that it would be awesome to have that shelf with a rug and some cushions.
The idea of a reading nook is wonderful!
Tashabgd, I've seen that shelf (or something very similar) in the Pottery Barn Kids catalog.
I agree with @dcirene's comments. It also feels like the furniture was pushed together in order to take the snap shot...but in any case, this room is only half done. Along with the rug on the floor you will need to do something to bring the too-high ceiling closer to the kids or to fill the space overhead for good feng shui (that will keep them comfortable so they can focus on reading). I would suggest painting the left sloping wall a brighter/darker/deeper color. I would also hang some papery colorful items from the ceiling to create hanging art and fill up the space. Pearl River Market has some great butterfly kites or Chinese lanterns or parasols all in paper and cheap so they are safe if they fall down on little ones heads.
Totally agree with the comments about the practicality of this 'book nook'. The shelf is far too high and could be a danger if a child were to stand on the bench to try to reach a book.
I had a wide window seat as a child where I loved to read; it was wide enough for my parents to sit and snuggle with me as they read to me as well.
Some other ideas taken from classroom are a reading garden, a reading pool and a reading pen (as in animals). Anything that you can do to make reading more appealing is a great way to encourage kids to curl up with a book.
