We read somewhere a long time ago that a bench (or a footboard) at the end of the bed can be good Feng Shui in the right context, since it keeps energy from windows and/or doors from rushing onto the bed and disturbing your sleep. Although we're not really Feng Shui practitioners, this detail stuck with us and—as goofy as it sounds—it made us look at benches in a new way.
Suddenly, benches didn't seem like psuedo-seating anymore. They seemed like grounded protectors of the home—pieces of furniture that could offer an extra seat, a tabletop surface, shelving, or even some energy adjustment when needed.
When we see bedrooms with benches, we think of them as somehow tapping into this sense that a bed needs to be anchored in a room. Maybe we're crazy, but there's something reassuring about a bedroom with a bench.

I like this idea, but I prefer trunks/chests with storage (as in #4) since they can still be used as benches but are more versatile.
I have just put a bench at the end of my bed. I love the way it looks but my shins are now littered with bruises.
My pets started sleeping on the bench (rather than the bed). I'm VERY happy about this. When we have a bunch of company over, I pull the bench out of the bedroom & use it as extra living room seating
I am in love with those lamps in the 5th picture! Does anyone know the source?
I love a bench at the end of the bed! My favorite example of all time is in the Chelsea home interior designer Kimberly Hall recently renovated. She placed a small upholstered love-seat at the end of a four poster metal bed, it looks stunning!

I prefer the trunk at the end of the bed; a) extra storage for bedding, b) it keeps the duvet from falling off the bed.
