Granted, this isn't the first time we've seen a replica Narnia that someone has built for their children. But it's a pretty cool one, and it's taking the internet by storm.
The room showed up in a post on Reddit, where the Redditor, kelseypolo, explains that when her friends were building their house, they found some extra space next to one of the kids' rooms. They had some fun turning it into a Narnia-themed playroom and putting a wardrobe over the entrance for the full effect.
While most Redditors found it "totally awesome," many of them questioned whether it was a fire hazard and whether, well, illicit goings-on might happen in there in the future. What do you think? Totally cool, over the top, or potentially hazardous?

Very awesome. As for it being a potential hazard, how is it any different than kids building blanket forts in their rooms? That wardrobe is pretty much the same as an exit. If they were super concerned, they could just not put clothing in there. And believe it or not, not every child does anything terribly illicit while in the confines of his or her personal space. My biggest crime was hiding the cookies I had smuggled from the kitchen.
THIS IS SO COOL. I would've loved this as a kid!

Oh, that is so cool! I wish I'd had it when I was a kid.
that is a little scary, eep!
I think this is pretty neat, but that fact that the armoire is in front of the dorway could be a potential problem if they were to evacuate the house, because someone that does not live there would not necessarely look inside the armoire when evacuating the house.
I think of it as a safety issue from another direction. We see stories everyday (at least I have seen three that I remember recently) about kids hiding during home invasions. This provides not only a safe place to play, but a safe place to hide should some event like this occur. In a weird way I would almost call these kiddie safe rooms.
This looks far safer than my little hideout that I created which was the top shelf of a closet that I would climb using a chair to get to the rail and swing myself up to the shelf, I would sleep up there too, my parents actually couldn't find me one morning!
All kids hiding places create hazard during a fire. For my little brother, his "fort" and safe area was behind the couch. Would a fireman be able to find him? That is not the problem, the problem is really that it is a room without a window that is closed off by a door. Ventilation is a problem. Escape during a fire is a problem for anyone of any age that spends a lot of time in that room. Some bathrooms have the same issue, but we tend not to spend hours in that type of room so the risk is lower that a fire would happen and we would be trapped.
As for illicit goings on, do you mean drugs or s*x? Because that can happen anywhere adults are not. Including a coat closet. If you would be that concerned, then the family should live loft-style in one giant open room so everyone can be watched at all times. A hidey hole is a lovely creative idea, I think. Super cool!
Whyyyy is that asterisk in the word "sex"?
I think it's a lovely thing. If I were worried about fire, I'd have it inspected for safety to reduce the risk, rehearse a fire drill, and maybe make a rule that Wardrobe doors must stay open while playing in Narnia (after all, Lucy left the door open a crack when she went through). If illicit happenings become a risk, then perhaps it's time to turn Narnia back into a closet.
I can see where it might be a saftey issue, but it is pretty cool. As a little girl I would have loved that room. I might have just painted trees/landscape instead of adding a specific Narnia mural on the end wall. That way it's more fun to think you're actually in a forest in a completely different world without the riminder that it's specifically "Narnia"
Looks like there's an air vent into the space anyway (top right) so I can't say that I see this being any more "dangerous" than people who make play areas in their basement, especially as long as they do proper radon testing and all that. :)
reminder - I need to typo/spell check my posts more often :)
It's great! And got to be safer than a tree house.
as a light source they should have used a lamp post rather than over head lighting.
I don't know why the room would cause anything more illicit than what already goes on behind teenagers' doors. It's not as if their parents don't know the door/room is there.
LOVE THIS. Webster was a fave tv show and he had those great hide outs in his house. I would make sure the fire dpt was aware of this by telling them or even inviting them to your house. perhaps with a tray of cookies. Find out the proper (reflecting) signs or stickers needed for the hidden room. Other than that I see no dangers for this room.
I would have a second entrance/exit to this room, and, well, though I love Narnia, I don't love anything enough to build a Disneyesque, hyper-specific, themed room about it in my house. If I were going to build an enclave like this for my kids, it would, perhaps, be a library, or some other creative space that was suited to changing and growing interest. And, yeah, it would have a second door.
Looks like fun, but probably doesn't meet building codes for egress because of the small door. Might not matter though, since it's not a bedroom.
The thing that puzzles me: "found some extra space next to one of the kids' rooms." How does that happen when you're building a house?
That is absolutely magnificent. Those are some very lucky children! The 100-year old cape cod where I grew up had cavernous crawlspaces under the eaves where we found the remnants of a secret hideout from a former homeowner's child. It was neat to think another kid had enjoyed the secret spots I loved throughout my childhood,
Very cute, though I would stuff the wardrobe with coats and yes, add a lamp post!
I would agree with notifying local public safety and adding some kind of sticker to the bedroom window to indicate the hidden area. It's more likely that you'd need the kids to be found there by emergency responders than need them to have a hiding place from intruders.
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was published in 1950. It's been a beloved book far longer than it's been a movie, and far longer than it's been a Hollywood merchandise machine. I remember reading this when I was a kid. If the room had been Secret Garden themed, would people say it was too Disneyesque? What if the kids love The Chronicles of Narnia? I think that would help stimulate their imaginations just as much as giving them a blank slate.
Cool little space! I would have loved it as a kid.. in fact I would love it now (maybe without the Narnia theme, however).
I don't understand why this would be any more of a fire hazard than a walk-in closet. As for illicit activities: please, give me a break. Really. If your greatest worry is that your kids are making out or smoking pot in a Narnia closet, you are one lucky parent- lighten up.
It is good to let your emergency personnel know where you have safe rooms or hidden rooms, but this idea isn't new. Many houses are putting these in these days and there are even companies that are designed for creating them and including escape tunnels to go with them. It is a new market.
For the person who said you are more likely to need to need to tell emergency personnel where to go to get kids out than to have them hide from intruders...let's hope so. But if you google news stories of both cases, one certainly out weighs the other. Frankly kids hide where ever they want to hide, hidden rooms or not. I hid behind the drawers on an old bunk bed set when I was a kid. My parents would go nuts looking for me because I would pull the drawers back in behind me...
Cool! I would have loved it as a kid. It will easily convert into a walk-in closet someday (remove armoire, install normal door, rods, shelves...) or maybe even an en-suite bath, so the space isn't a waste. I would add a window or skylight, though, both for the natural light and for the ventilation.
And I agree, the room REQUIRES a lamp post!!! ;^)
Bitts: "crawlspaces under the eaves" -- do you mean like in _The Magician's Nephew_? :)
Oh for goodness sake people, it's just for FUN!!! I would've loved this as a child and I think these kids are lucky to have such cool parents. No one knows how to take the fun out of things like a bunch of overprotective adults. A lamp post would make it complete! Well done.
oh my god hahah this is the coolest kids room ever!!! Ummm the parents that are worried about safety concerns, boogeymen, pedophiles, fires... I hope you have your kids in bubbles... For their sake- to get away from you...
And I was slightly disappointed that it was so Narnia themed... but still the most awesome room ever... I wish we could set up our house like this. But you know I'm afraid my pot smoking 2 year old might die in a fire he started while he was toking up with the pedophile that snuck into this room while trying to kidnap him.
Yea, once the kids figure out the magic of stuffing dryer sheets into a paper towel tube, illicit goings on will happen. This will be around the same time the horomones kick in, so hanky-panky will also be assured.
That is so cool. Those kids must be the toast of the neighborhood. What wonderful memories they're going to have, and what awesome parents!
Oh my! hahaha that is so ugly! Cool idea however
@PI, absolutely agreed. And if its entrance is via a wardrobe, the WHOLE POINT is that you're going through the wardrobe into Narnia. That's what makes this so clever.
When I was little, I would have collapsed in excitement over this. People are such downers here.
S*x is so much more s*exy when the E is starred! ;-) Awesome idea, unattractive mural.
Are you guys kidding me? I want a room like that. Who wouldn't? I STILL love the Chronicles of Narnia; C.S. Lewis is one of my all time favorites, Narnia and beyond.
@KBON, I totally agree. I think the idea is amazing, but the room is actually really ugly, and is extremely limited in terms of creative play. Why not have that be the entrance to a beautiful, well-ventilated, playroom with windows, books, toys and a fire exit? It just seems so unnecessary...
How is it a hazard?
Everyone knows it's foolish to shut oneself up in a wardrobe. Always leave the door open a crack.
i believe it is intended as fun and innocent. Those suggesting it's some sort of pedophile lair should just relax. Actually, now that i look at that word, shouldn't "pedophile" describe someone who likes feet? The prefix for children is "pedio". And "phile" simply describes someone who likes something. I think "pedioviolar" would be much more accurate (violator of children).
