Unexpected and inexpensive, pennies are a gorgeous material to tile with. The rich warmth of copper and the use of coins with different levels of wear and tarnish give penny tiling a very pleasing and random texture and pattern. A post on Apartment Therapy featuring the penny floor at the Standard Grill in New York a year ago remained vivid in my memory and I thought the idea might be worth revisiting. Here's a roundup of examples of penny tiling.

from far away it can be cool but close up I don't love it
i love the aesthetic and the idea. HOWEVER the standard grill smells like old pennies. still very cool.
Yea, I love the idea and have seen people doing this years ago but don't think I'd ever do it shot of sealing the pennies after. Cold metal under your feet and a coppery smell. Maybe it goes away with time and regular cleaning?
Wasn't this in dwell years ago? I loved it every since. I wonder if you give it good seal if the smell would go away?
The Hotel Congress here in Tucson, AZ has a penny floor. I was thinking about doing this in my bathroom.

Although it looks amazing, the installation cost would be huge---either in payment to your happy tile guy or in blood sweat and tears....
its not illegal with pennies
