The other day, we posted a gorgeous Swedish reading nook that, while beautiful, was admittedly a little staged. For a more down-to-earth perspective, we're looking today at five real-life reading corners from Apartment Therapy house tours. These smart people have used just a few simple items to construct a home hideaway where they can escape with a good book and maybe a mug of coffee...
The elements of a great reading nook:
• an out-of-the way corner
• a comfortable chair, sofa or lounge
• a blanket and/or pillows
• a good reading lamp
• a rug underfoot
• if possible, a window nearby
• some good reading material
Photos shown above:
• 1 Dana's bedroom sofa
• 2 Steve's living room spot
• 3 Kathleen and Alex's nook in the study
• 4 Kathleen and Alex's bedroom corner
• 5 Christy and John's landing on the stairs

Where is that rug from in pic 2? That thing is amazing and probably not cheap.
We are in the process of making a reading nook in our loft and I can't wait to see how it turns out!
That first one is quite pretty, but there's no lamp or table!
I LOVE the third and fourth reading nooks with a passion I usually reserve for multi-colored mittens and Sunday brunch. Love them!
Now to get all apartmenttherapy bitch critical, the clear chair in the second nook looks hideous. and uncomfortable. If that wasn't there I think the second reading nook would be A .
Oh Lord, I didn't even see the clear chair.
But now, these third and fourth reading nooks - the third has no side table, the fourth has neither lamp nor table. So really, they are not suitable for reading.
Is it AT bitch critical to say that the person who selected these photos probably doesn't actually read? Probably. But I still think so.
I like a handy spot to place a beverage anywhere I plan to sit for any length of time. And good light is crucial. 2 and 5 seem to be the only ones that fulfill all nook requirements.
A good reading nook requires a small table or ledge or shelf or something you can put your book, glasses, glass of water or whatever on top of. Only pictures 2 and 5 seem to have tables, but 2's are unusable. (2 in general is over-accessorized. It looks more like a store display than a good place to read.) And 1 and 4 don't seem to have any nearby reading lamps. I think good reading light and a place to put your book are more important than blankets, rugs or pillows.
This was not a very good round-up. I swear I've seen better examples of reading nooks here on AT.
No. 3 is my favorite. Looks cozy and comfortable, not so much for show as the others.
I gotta agree w/ Joanne M -
Where are the lamps and side tables that make these spaces so great for reading?
The first thing a reading nook needs is a reading chair, and a reading chair absolutely needs ARMRESTS! So I'd go for the hideous chair before the beautiful lounging chairs in 2 and 3. The second thing is a lamp. So although number 5 is not all that glamourous, it is the best bet for someone who actually reads. And I just love it's beautiful bookshelf behind the chair.
I think it can be kind of tricky to pull off a good reading nook. If there's just a chair hanging out alone in a corner somewhere, I always feel like it's been shunned by the other furniture or like it's where you have to go sit by yourself in time-out if you get in trouble. Number 3 looks that way to me.
We have a little reading area with two armchairs, a little table and a lamp, and a big ottoman for both of us to put our feet up on. It feels a little less lonely somehow.
I'm so weird...
My parents have a gorgeous reading nook. My Dad designed it, and it has plenty of natural light, shelving, a reading lamp, pillows galore, and enough space for several to sprawl comfortably!

Here's a picture of my recently created reading nook, still a work in progress...
