We found these before and after pics on Flickr and thought they'd be great to show how just by rearranging some furniture, your space can look and feel completely different. While the objects in this before photo are organized and symmetrical, something feels a little off. Perhaps it's because the furniture is placed out in the open but gorgeousfootsteps reworked the space to give it a completely different vibe.

By simply taking the height away (which was competing with the edge of the stairs) goregeousfootsteps, scaled down the objects and made this space have a purpose--the sewing zone. By framing a negative space above the work area, our eyes are much more open to receiving the furniture arrangement. What once was awkward is now cozy looking and pleasing to the eye--well done!

Hm, doesn't it seem like the tower of drawers and the telephone table should trade places? That way it would line up a little better with the stairs.
It looks...off. The tall wooden drawers need to be switched with the low table.
Oh, I guess I didn't thoroughly read the text. But It still seems a little off.
I agree - I would swap the little phone table and the tall dresser too.
Um where did the printer go? And I find it hard to believe that is the 'sewing area.' Pretty tiny and man what uncomfortable looking stools/chairs. This person must not really sew.
I don't find it "pleasing to the eye." There's a messy mix of styles, and the arrangement is a bit off, as others have noted. I think it needs another try.
A better camera for the "after" shot?
those are IKEA stools! Great painting job!
If the sewing machine does not always stay at the table - it's a nice arrangement.
I don't like this at all.
it would be better if the table is painted in white.. the tower should switch place please.
i would like to see the AFTER after.
I would like to see a thread about where people put their printers? where did it go? I have that same printer and it looks crappy no matter where I put it.
I'm another in favour of the low table/tall drawer swap.
And yes, where DOES the printer go? I too have that ugly little beast and there's just no hiding it!
i don't find the vibe that different at all! it still feels the same, and just as cluttered only in a different way.
I'm not sure how much sewing one can accomplish in such a tight, cluttered space. It seems like there is a vast wall space girding the stairs that seems ripe for a nice shelving/organization system.
This looks very messy and mish-mashed to me. Actually, I think the before picture looks better.
I LOVE the black & white mosaic table - where's that from?
Given what this person had to work with, I think the "after" is much improved over the 'before."
It's more tidy, looks more functional (though you couldn't really do much more than hem a pair of shorts at this 'sewing station'), and those awful eyesore bins are elsewhere.
Nice job using what you had to make a small but effective improvement.
Next: paint the furniture white so that those stools and tiled side table really stand out!
Not feeling it at all.
i swear you people buy those keep calm posters just so you can put them on your wall and make a post about nothing. ie. this post.
just not cool for me...
i'm not really feeling this new arrangement at all. i can understand how the height of the previous one was an issue, but now it's the width with all these new elements. i agree with the other posters and would definitely swap the phone table with the other shelf.
Speaking of the poster, the crop job is cringe-worthy. Sorry to add to the negativity. Actually, no. Sometimes it's fun.
Geez, man. Why do people gotta harsh on this person's sewing table? When you use the sewing machine, you take the other things off the table and move the table out from the wall. My own sewing table - which I just used to sew a full sized quilt - isn't a whole lot bigger than that desk. Nor is my mom's antique sewing desk. Unless you're making ball gowns, where you do your actual sewing doesn't need to be that huge. You iron/cut out fabric/pin stuff together in a different area.
First off, I would agree that the tall chest needs to swap places w/ the low tile table to better work in harmony with the stairs but what I think is also not working is the tile table that just seems to be an add on to the tableu. Do you really need the phone on that table? If not, then move it to another area that's handy if you can.
the before just seemed static with it just being a way station for the printer and a few supplies. A printer, if wireless can be stashed just about anywhere, such as in an armoir or cabinet or shelf where it's easy to get to, now it has a purpose and that's what makes it work IMO.
a suggestion, get a narrow shelf to put just above the desk and use that for the clock radio etc so when you need to sew, just pull the table out if need be and go at it. If you go with a shelf, move it a bit further up on the wall and put a small under shelf light there to light the work surface for when it's dark outside, just a suggestion.
Those poor people who posted their little photos on flikr.
What's the point here? It looks equally crap afterwards...
I think it is cute.
