- What I Love About My Small Home:
- I love so many things about this flat. We are in Maida Vale, a leafy area with a village feel while still being in Central London - we have a tube (subway) station a 30 second walk away! Also how we have managed to fit so much in to such a small space, we can sleep 6 people comfortably! My favorite thing is the TV unit which Ben made, it now displays all our favorite books, picture frames and pretty decorative bits.We also love all the home-made artwork on the walls that we've made over time.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- The whole flat needed renovating anyway but we saw the high ceilings (11ft) and decided to build mezzanine/sleeping platforms above what is now the kitchen and bathroom. It took a lot of work but now we have so much more space! We have turned what was a one bedroom flat into 2 and have space for an office area with lots of built in storage as a result of the magical platforms!

I think the sleeping platform is making me claustrophobic. The ceiling is..what, a foot and a half from the bed? Yikes.
Does the 388 sq ft include the loft? Amazing that it is now "two bedroom" but man I couldnt sleep that close to the ceiling!!
Ingenious use of space but, like others have said, sleeping in such an enclosed space wouldn't be for me! Love the map hearts on the wall too - I have one of my hometown on my wall... a prized possession!
Hi Rebecca - I'm really interested in how your partner made those shelves - I've only seen guides using American plumbing supplies - is there any way you could let me know?
From the top of the mattress to the ceiling is 2ft 8" of space (and by the time you've sunk into the mattress, you can even sit up straight!). It doesn't feel claustrophobic but actually very cosy! The photo makes it look smaller than it is. Thanks for the comments though :)
And @annabelvita, my partner is just replying to you!
Hi @AnnabelVita,
The shelving unit is made using pine, walnut stain, 25mm brass plated steel tube (used for wardrobe rails), brass plated end sockets (again for wardrobes), black spray paint to paint the tube and sockets, 21mm dowel, 6 small metal angles for fixing to the wall and some screws.
The timber is cut to size and 21mm holes are drilled in the desired locations, about halfway through the bottom and top shelves and all of the way through the others.
The tube is painted and cut to the desired height of the shelves, this can be done with a hacksaw or a pipe cutter.
The dowel has to be cut to this length plus the thickness of a shelf (half of the extra length goes in the shelf below and half in the shelf above).
The end sockets are painted and then screwed into place at the top and bottom of each pole.
I was surprised at how sturdy it was at this stage but still decided it was best to fix it to the wall using metal angles. These were painted black and located under the third shelf from the bottom and above the top shelf.
Please let me know if you have any more questions about it, as I know I haven’t explained it were well. It is easier to make than explain!
I am going to be making another one shortly and it would be easy enough to make another one at the same time if you are interested.
Ben
Interesting space. Would like to see a full house tour.
I, too, am on the claustrophobia/cozy fence, but since we all sleep laying down, I guess it doesn't really matter if there's much vertical space. I think it's ingenious to take advantage of your space like that.
I love the tiny stair up to the super king loft, and the romantic shower, and feel curiousity about the old school desk and antique table and upcycled chairs. Good luck in the competition, and hope you'll give us a full house tour after you win. :)
I love the wall unit, the Beatles quote, and the fridge. I do feel a panic attack coming on looking at the bed however.
@ben27 thanks so much! I think that all makes sense. I'm trying to figure out a way to make the perfect console table with shelving to go behind our sofa - yours is very inspiring.
Thank you all so much for your comments! We have applied to Apartment Therapy to do a house tour but haven't heard anything back. I will reapply after this contest so hopefully we can show you the rest soon!
When can I move in?? :D
I have friends who served in the navy and they tell me that amount of space between bed and ceiling is palatial. I think this was an ingenious way to maximize your space and applaud your efforts.
I too feel a *little* claustrophobic about the bedroom ceiling, but I totally admire the ingenuity.
I love your living room, the arched window, the shelving unit, and the way the sectional tucks so nicely into the corner. It looks like a super cozy and comfortable place to hang out.
I slept in a loft bed much like that for years (my bedroom was a converted Tuff Shed), and it's really quite cozy! I never bonked my head waking up, and it made the most wonderful little place to read before I fell asleep. Beautiful home!
great little place...seems like it would be a major pain to make the beds, though!
I think the photos don't do this home justice. The *bedroom* probably isn't as claustrophobic as the photo makes it seem. I applaud the excellent use of space, the fabulous media unit, the uniqueness of the space and cast another vote for a full tour. I'd really like to see the dining area. Hoorah for the UK!
Also, I think you should rehang the artwork in your loving space. Centre at 60 (inches) has always been a useful tool for me. Good luck in the contest!
the sleeping space is small and would make me a little claustrophobic, but what I really wonder is how it affects, ahem, other bedroom activities...that might require a bit more space ;)
Thanks again everyone for all your lovely comments! They make me smile!
Will definitely try and get a house tour up!
@Skylarkmelody the pillows are from coxandcox but I think they do sell them elsewhere too :)
Wow, that bed is terribly close to the ceiling! I don't want to lower the tone too much here or get too personal but I'm thinking that might impose some restrictions on certain in-bed activities... The flat looks really nice otherwise, but I'm amazed at what some people will put up with to live in certain neighbourhoods!
Would love to feature your place on my blog. Graduating from London College of Fashion next month and will be using the blog as a folio of my work. Contact me if you're interested: jademelissathomson@hotmail.com
