Q: "I'm looking for some apps or software to help me with time management, because during the day I deal with a lot of tasks. Ideally, the system will alert me with a pop up when I need to start or stop working.
There are two things that make it tricky: one, I have different schedules on different days of the week, and two, I need applications for both Mac and PC, because I work on different systems while at home and in the office. (A Linux option would be quite welcome, too.) Thanks!"
A: For OS X, we like Alarms. With an extensive demo time and a simple, efficient interface, Alarms lets you schedule just about anything, and quickly.
For Windows, try TikTokToDo ($19), a graphical timer system that lets you break down the day into segments, with reminders at intervals.
Linux users should check out the Timer Applet, a countdown timer that runs in the GNOME panel. Allows multiple timers to run simultaneously, alerting the user when they've run out.
Chimoo Timer is a freeware option for Mac OS X, and runs in the background as a countdown timer -- far simpler than the larger-scale Alarms, but still effective. Set up multiple timers to run throughout the day, alerting you when you need to switch to a different task.
