Q: I grew up seeing a pair of these lamps on my parents bedside tables and always loved them. I inherited them both but one was sacrificed during one of our many moves and lost a lampshade. The old shades were massive with bold gold stitching on the top and bottom edges and random splashes of gold paint on the parchment-like paper. I’d love to find an updated version to make this lamp new again. Any suggestions?

White Enamel Four-P...
I would recommend a color that would juxtapose nicely with the gold in a solid color because you don't want to clash with the detail of the base. So I would recomment a rich purple or indigo drum shade.
A short drum shade without a taper would look great here.
a drum shade in orange totally mcm looking!!
A gray drum shade to match the "grout" color between the tiles. Like on this lamp: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/sf/lighting/wirebase-table-lamp-from-west-elm-042713
You could get some parchment drum shades and splash gold paint on them.
Can anyone recommend a resource for custom lampshades besides DIY?
Moonshine Lampsade company does excellent MCM reproductions. I had them create a pair of rectangular shades for my MCM marvels. I highly recommend them.
I would recommend a drum shade in a bright, solid color that would complement your decor. I have no idea, of course, what sort of scheme you have going in the room the lamp will be in, but I'm imagining (perhaps because it is summertime) a bright coral or turquoise. I'd stay away from anything too "retro" or earth-toned. Something more contemporary would actually play up the vintage design really well.
If you can't find the color shade you're looking for and diffuse light isn't a big deal, you can paint a solid white fabric shade with acrylic or latex paint. It'll take several coats (prime first) in order that the brush strokes won't be visible when the light is on, and again you will lose the diffuse light, but I did this with great success on a bedside lamp where all I really needed was the downlight to read by anyway.
Good luck!
sry, that should be *Lampshade* LOL
Here's where I get my lampshades:

I'd check ebay for 1950's fiberglass lampshades. Trying to find a new shade can be tricky: the new hardware on shades don't always fit older lamps, and the proportions can be a bit off.
If you're looking to use a different colour, I think a bright turquoise blue or deep orangie coral would look pretty cool.
I agree with the bright color suggestions. Bonus: Looks like ANY color would work.

Maybe something like this paper lamp shade: http://papershadelamps.com/mushroomlamp.html but much, much bigger?
Super-bright turquoise or super-bright coral in almost any shape. Or maybe one of each?
Check out Moon Shades for reproduction shades to update your midcentury modern lamp. You can select from various style shades, color combinations and retro patterns like sparkle and splatter. Check it out!
Nice lamp base. I just saw the AT post on putting glitter on your concrete floor so my head is a glitter cloud. What about a lampshade rolled in gold glitter.
I'd go with a black lacquered drum shade with gold leaf on the inside.
I say a solid color lampshade with clean lines so as to not distract from the pattern of your lamp.
