Q: Any recommendations on a modern tall dresser/chest of drawers around 70"? Everywhere I look they're about 48" tops. I prefer not to spend more than $600. Ideally they would be like these (shown above, from CB2 and IKEA), but double the height.

White Enamel Four-P...
That Ikea Malm dresser comes taller: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40053930
why don't you just buy two and stack them?
i have this one from ikea--i changed the pulls and get all sorts of compliments. people don't realize it wasn't $$$ in the brown/black color

How would you reach drawers higher than about 50"?
What about the 2x4 Expedit from Ikea with drawer inserts? http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60156282

Then of course, there's Craigslist and your local flea markets...
Craigslist is always my go-to place for furniture. I think it's a goldmine.
I (at 4'11") second the question about using the top drawers! Even tall people would have trouble seeing the contents at 70 inches!
Maybe some stackable barrister bookshelves.
Totally agree, White on White. I got a mid-century modern dining set (6 chairs and a table) for 250 bucks on there. You're pretty much bound to find something good on there, just keep your eyes peeled for a couple of weeks.
How do you even see what's in the top drawers?
I think that may be why they're not taller.
I am also insanely curious about how Rachel's planning on using these. XD
(I note that even from bepsf's finds, the WE is merely 55"....)
Otherwise, suggestions for stacking: stolmen chest with 2 drawers (also comes narrower).
Four of these will get you to 71" for $400! Although the drawers are not very deep, and maybe you don't want the open pull....
(... do you really really mean 70"? I hope you do; I want to hear about this!)
I'm 6'6", and 60" is about as high as I think I could go with a dresser - my 48" Malm serves me well. That said, I could completely understand wanting a tall dresser if you have a lot of clothes (or are sharing this with another person) and live in a small apartment, if you're very tall and/or don't mind using a stepping stool to get clothes you don't use often. It could be a good use of vertical space.
I agree with Bianca, as long as they're stable - that'll get you to a bit over 60". And the 55" West Elm dresser that bepsf linked to is beautiful.
Have you thought about going to an unfinished furniture shop and seeing if you can order a piece and have it customized the way you like?
How are people determining their budgets? And why are they doing before they actually see what's out there?
If you find a non-Ikea, non-West Elm option for under $600, please let me know where.
I very much advise AGAINST the Ikea dresser! Even though it looks AWESOME, I purchased the taller Malm dresser and it fell apart within 6 months :(
I have an IKEA Hemnes dresser and the bottoms of the drawers are just particle board and falling it. I recommend getting a solid wood dresser... that or making some modifications to an Ikea one :)
I have two tall Ikea Malm dressers and they have been great even after three moves to different states. They are now 7 years old.
I've had the IKEA dresser for 2+ years and it's solid as ever, so I have to disagree with lisa.perry!
What about thinking outside the box. I recently bought my daughter a china cabinet/book shelf (wood shelves not glass) from Ikea to use as her clothes storage in her room because I too could not find a dresser high enough for the space I wanted it for (I just bought some coordinating fabric and velcroed it to the inside of the doors). However, all of us fell in love with this new cabinet from Ikea http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/80157134 that my other daughter would like for her 40's glam bedroom. It comes with 2 drawers inside. It is not as high as you'd like, but it makes up for it in width.
I have this tall dresser from Overstock.
It's about 5ft tall, holds a ton of stuff, very nice quality. The only downside is that it took forever to put together.
I just bought this one from Cost Plus (it's on sale for $229): http://www.worldmarket.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3557692
And it looks reallynice once assembled.
