NASA's image database is full of great stuff. I've been using the same image for six years now of the limb of the earth.
Gooseberry Patch has free desktops. Not modern like these, but I like desktops that remind me of the season.
I really like kate.net for holiday and seasonal wallpapers and vladstudio.com for fun graphical ones.
