During our evening commute last night we heard about a progressive LADWP program aimed at lower income households, with the goal of replacing thousands of energy inefficient refrigerators in the city with newer Energy Star appliances. The program aimed at households with persons making less than $28,600 per 2 household members offers brand new refrigerators at no charge.

The DWP was quoted projecting the replacement to efficient appliances would result in the city saving $12 million annually, with residents saving 10% on their energy bills. For more information about the low income program, contact DWP Customer Services by phone at 1(800) DIAL DWP (342-5397) or by e-mail at

And residents who don't qualify, but who are interested in upgrading their old refrigerator should look into the REfrigerator Turn-In and REcycle (RETIRE) Program, a program with similar aims and added incentives. Not only will you receive a $35 rebate to stock your new fridge, but also 6 compact fluorescent bulbs to save even more energy, alongside complimentary pick-up and recycling services for your busted up old fridge. DWP is truly a friend of LA and it's residents!
