It's true, I want to be a modernist, but I'm much more eclectic at heart. Blame it on architecture school, but my brain says iconic design pieces while my gut wants something a little cushy and cozy when it comes to the living room. Here's where such schizophrenic sensibilities land you:
1) Untitled Mark Rothko at Christie's
2) Perry Floor Lamp by Ralph Lauren
3) Wilshire Sofa at Williams Sonoma
4) DUX High Back Lounge Chair at The Good Mod
5) cork floors as spotted in Dwell's NextHouse
6) Flatweave Offset Stripe Rug at Restoration Hardware
7) Leather hassock from Mosaik Moroccan Imports

I think this one breaks the mold for what is considered a "dream living room"..the Rothko isn't a print, it's the real deal auctioned at Christies...estimated between $2,799,000 - $3,421,000. Yikes.
Love the mix, especially the rug! You can never go wrong with grey!

This look is gorgeous!! i totally appreciate the struggle between wanting to be modern, but also pining for something comforting...the Hassock from Mosaik Moroccan Imports is just fab! i have a sofa very similar to the one you show here from Camerich and it really helped me find that balance of modern and comfort....
Love Rosilind x
That is a FANTASTIC lamp! I love the silhouette.
The play "Red" is about how Mark Rothko feared his work becoming mere "decor" (he pulled the Four Seasons Restaurant commission over such fears) and here his painting is used just as that: decor. Just saying . . . . .
I just bought that chair, but in teak, for less than a third of the cost of what the Good Mod is selling it for. What a steal. One step closer to the dream.
Cripes, now people are complaining about prices in a DREAM ROOM?
A heads up for anyone buying Moroccan hassocks: buy from a reliable source. I purchased some online directly from an exporter, and what I received absolutely stank (weird leather tanning products) and the stitching quality was awful. Lesson learned.
Modern vs. comfort is a dilemma I too struggle with. My Petrie sofa from Crate and Barrel looks good but is uncomfortable to sit on. So it rarely gets used.
They have three or four of those exact lamps at our local HomeGoods right now; it's somewhere between $50 and $100.
