Q: I would like to do something about my new apartment's closet doors. Any creative and inexpensive solutions that don't involve getting new doors which is definitely not an option? I'm willing to engage in plenty of DIY if necessary! Thanks!

Editor: Ana- yeah, those doors do seem a little dated. Luckily, there are lots of ways to give them some new style. If you like the mirrors, but just want less reflection, you can tape off a smaller frame to stay as a mirror, and then frost around it to create some patterns. If you want to lose the mirrors, you can glue or tack some thin lauan into the frame and paint it white to match the doors. You could also cover the mirrors with fabric panels to add some visual interest. We also recommend changing out the hardware- long metal bars on the doors will make them look more sleek than the current knobs.
Readers- any recommendations for Ana?

Personally, I think those doors are AWESOME. If it were me, I would keep the mirrors for sure. New hardware is a great suggestion. If you're allowed to paint, I would change the shade, maybe even do something two toned or a pattern.
May be stencil off some part of the mirror and frost the remaining area to give a "venetian mirror" effect?
Though can't say if that would match your style or not.
I like the doors! But maybe that's just because my closets came with particleboard doors that were covered with dark wood veneer and patched with brown duct tape.
I agree that changing the hardware will make a huge difference. The round knobs look out of place with all those horizontal lines above and below them.
If you don't like the mirror, maybe you could use a translucent fabric to cover it so there is still some light reflected through.
If you don't like the mirrors, you can also get that film in various shades/textures to put on them, and it's easily removable when you move out. Rice Paper, stained glass, etc. There was a post about those not too long ago.
Also, there have been a few tours lately where people painted just the inside of the molding to great effect.
What do you specifically not like about them? That would help answer the question.
What's your style? I think they would look amazing if you painted the doors black, added some glam glass doorknobs, and stenciled an art deco design in frost on the mirrored fronts. That would be some serious DIY - but you asked for it!
I too rather like the doors and think they would take on a whole new look just with a change of hardware.
I also agree that not knowing what it is about the doors that you don't like, as well as what style you are going for... Color palette... Furniture...makes it more difficult for suggestions....
.
Based on not knowing....there is always stenciling, fabric, paint...
Have you moved in yet, or are you panicking because you are looking at these in an empty apartment?
If you haven't moved in, my advice is to get the rest of the room finished, then see how you feel. I predict they will be a non-issue.
My fear would be that by doing anything to them will only end up calling more attention to them than would be your intent. Focus your budget and creativity on the rest of the room.
If you're still freaking out, I'd try some louvered shutters over the mirrors, or a sheer fabric on rods over the mirrored sections. You're lucky they are not sliders!
I think you have a great space for a Wow! nook. Paint the wall the the left of the doors (at right angles), and around the top. Accent the bevel detail on te doors ina complementary colour. Hang a small, dramatically framed work of art on the left wall, or of the 4 mirrors are too much, in front of the two outside mirrors, reducing the 'look at me!" factor, and adding some depth.
Fiannly, add some pattern when you do the window covering, which will be repeated in the mirrors, and lake the room seem extended
Personally, I love your doors. It's funny how the grass is greener.
My new condo bedroom closet doors were metal! Louvered metal! I was pretty shocked, but since they were 'original', I decided to embrace them. HAH The floor guy took them down and threw them away because they no longer fit after he had laid my new wood floor. It cost a grand to get new painted louvered doors, and the knobs didn't match!
If they really bug you, I'd consider the etched glass sheets referred to above. They are great looking, and transform a door. But it's not a modern look, IMO.

I am glad I am not the only one that would really like to have doors like these. I think they look really nice. And they bounce the light around the room.
Not knowing what you're style is, hard to say. I would personally prob just change the knobs. Someone more adventurous could modgepodge some cool fabric / paper onto the bottom panels.
(I'm thinking of adding fabric to the inside of my cabinets, but I'm a sissy.)
I rather like them actually. The mirrors are maybe a bit much. I think I'd etch them or find privacy cling to tone down the reflectiveness and keep them in keeping with the rest of the room.
I have something similar in my room, but instead of mirrors I had shutters and they drove me crazy. I took out the entire door and just use a curtain on a shower rod now.
I actually like them, and I think the mirrors are great, they double the light coming from the window.
I think your best bet would be to make a feature of them by painting them a solid, strong, highlight colour - like tourqouise or deep pink or even black (it's hard to know your style from the picture).
Also (although again there's not enough visible in the picture to know if this would go with your style) you could hang a single tie-back curtain to the left of the picture, it would define that alcove the wardrobe is in, and make it look like a little dressing room, but you wouldn't lose any light from the windows. But even if you do this I woul still paint the doors a highlight colour.
I think these are really awesome doors.
here is a link to a blog
where she has taken bifold doors
and transformed them

but i like your doors too
I really like the doors and don't understand how these are dated - to what date? Even the mirrors have nice beveled edges. Maybe get a couple new pulls that are more substantial or contemporary or whatever look you feel is currently missing. If it's that you don't like having that many mirrors, I would get some nice window transparency film - but not the adhesive kind as your landlord would be less than pleased to have you permanently change the mirrors.

My apartment has some really crappy bifold doors in it. They either get stuck on the runners quite frequently, or block the door to the room. We took them down and put up a curtain rod. With 9 foot ceilings meaning 9 foot doors, that meant installing the curtain rod into the ceiling. It actually works out pretty great - adds color and visual interest to the room, keeps a dividing line, and allows us to occassionally max out the space and have items hanging partially out but still covered.
Thanks for all the suggestions! As of now I am leaning towards painting them white, change the hardware and see how they look before doing anything more drastic. Sounds good?
They looked white to me at first glance, but they are a grey shade are they? In that case, if you can, paint them the same shade as the walls in a semi gloss. Get some of that cling stuff to reduce the reflection if you really need to but otherwise - I'd leave them!
