It's the day
after Thanksgiving, which means the holiday season has officially begun. We know that a lot of people so love this time of year that they immediately go out and get a tree. But wait! We just read, through Greenlight magazine, about great programs in Portland and San Francisco.
Celebrating its 15th year in Portland is The Original Living Christmas Tree Company. For $75, and a $15 refundable deposit, TOLCTC will deliver a tree to you in mid-December and then pick it up after New Year's. They then plant it somewhere in the Northwest where it can grow and thrive. How easy and green and wonderful is that?
The San Francisco Department of the Environment (in conjunction with
Friends of the Urban Forest, has a similar
Green Christmas program that just started last year. For $90, living street trees are delivered to City residents to use as Christmas trees, and then later picked up and planted in City neighborhoods.
The only catch is that these aren't your classic, traditional fir and pine Christmas trees. But they're not Charlie Brown trees, either. They're fruitless olives, Brisbane boxes, and other types, range from six to 12 feet high.
Specifics about the 2006 SF program aren't yet available, but we'll update you when dates and other details are released. If you're in Portland, however, check out the TOLCETC website and place your order now.
