Q: I'm trying to find replacement cushions for our IKEA Ektorp sofa. The back cushions especially have completely lost their support in the 3 years we've owned it. IKEA doesn't sell replacement cushions and I don't believe they are covered by the 10 year warranty.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Oh dear...you may end up paying more for the replacement cushions than you did for the couch if you go to a custom upholsterer in NYC...if you're looking to replace the inside only, go get some down feathers or foam and refill.
You can always just buy some foam batting and extra polyfil to fill them out. The Ivy Cottage did an amazing tutorial on fixing up her couch that I plan to use for my sagging monstrosity.
I got an ikea couch for free sans cushions and a cover. So I went to ikea and bought a new cover. Then went to joann's, with my 50 percent of coupon in tow, and bought batting and a big thick sheet of foam. I used the cover as a template, traced, cut with a bread knife, and wrapped them in batting, and zipped it up. People who also have the karlstad think my back cushions are way better.
I had this exact same problem with an ektorp I bought through Craigslist. We did what an earlier poster recommended and supplemented the Ikea filler with polyfil batting. They feel great and no one notices the difference.
Are the cushions themselves really not covered by the 10 year warranty?
We bought our sofas as a temporary solution about 3 months ago and we can already feel the wooden base through the seat cushions.
I guess you really do get what you pay for >:-(
I just fixed my Ektorp cushions the same way -- opened up a small hole along the seam in the side, stuffed in a medium size bag of batting, and then stitched it back up. Good as new.
I'm selling this couch due to my move out of state! The thing with my couch is the cover needs to be replaced but the actual structure of the couch is in perfect condition. I'm located in Greenpoint. Email me at buymythingz@gmail.com and I'm willing to work out a deal with you, if you are interested!
I have the same problem with a Mitchell gold sofa (that I paid alot more for than I would have with Ikea) -- I may have to resort to the homemade version of cushions, but I am wondering if anyone has had any luck with buying replacement Mitchell Gold Cushions -- I can't even get the company to email me or call me back to tell me that they aren't available. (hideous customer service).
While washing the covers of my Ektorp cushions, my dog decided to chew the naked cushion into a hundred foam pieces with a dusting of feathers all over. Needless to say, I was very upset. I don't have much money, and I'm not as crafty as the people above; great ideas by the way, I'll definitely try that if I need to update my cushions :o) But I called IKEA in a panic, and they sent me an old cushion from their attic of floor models and it only cost me the shipping; the only thing wrong with it was a broken zipper. I LOVE IKEA! Maybe it's not "forever" furniture, but exactly how much of your furniture is really kept forever??? I believe that few pieces are truly heirloom, and those you know you wouldn't get from IKEA.
Have you tried Bemz? I know they sell covers, they might also have replacement cushions...?
I'm not sure what the cushions are filled with but I can guess it is 4-inch foam. If you can remove the foam, do so, and give it a good steaming (you can usually find a handheld steamer at your local laundrymat if you don't own one) - this will not only clean it but also reshape the foam to its original form. You can also simply buy new foam and custom cut it with a blade. An upholsterer should be able to do all of this for you at a decent price, but its pretty easy to do it yourself. As an upholsterer myself, I always give my customers the option of paying for new foam, or just letting me clean and repurpose the existing foam. Let me say this though...Ikea is not known for longevity and not all foams can be repurposed - so in the end you might run into the problem of a low quality foam and might need to bypass the steaming and just purchase new foam. hope this helped.
This may be a pricey solution, but i know the Ektorp is the same size as the Pottery Barn Classic sofa. Perhaps you could get cushions there.
This knowledge is actually more handy in the reverse. My sister was able to get the ektorp slip covers for a fraction of the price of what they would be in she got new slip covers from PB.
First, the cushions are totally covered by the warranty but only if you have the original recite. Otherwise you are out of luck. Saying that, any upholstery supply/foam store can make you cushions. You have to measure the cushions (fins instructions online) and give that to the people at the foam store.
If these options are too expensive, here's what I am planning to do with a couch I was given: I bought a King sized 4 inch memory foam topper at Overstock. I'm planning to use the old pillows to draw a paper template and then cut the topper with my Dad's electric knife he uses to carve the Thanksgiving turkey. We'll see how it goes.
I've discovered eSlipcovers. They must be pretty new, but you check them out as well eSlipcovers.
One thing I do like about the ektorp is being able to wash the covers and change the colors from time to time, however, I do agree about the cushions not lasting as long as I would want them to. A quick and cheap fix that I did was buy 3 of the $5 pillows at Walmart and stuff them into the covers of the pillows. Since the covers of the pillows have zippers, just flatten the soggy ektorp cushion to make room for the pillow to stuff into the cover, and there you go. Totally looks new!
Hope this helps!
Hi Kyann
I am going to try and take your advice and purchase foam and cut it myself. My dogs got to the foam while we set our cushion covers to the dry cleaners.
I know the foam cannot be repurposed so I will need to buy new. What kind of knife do you recommend and where can I find bulk foam that is sturdy but affordable? Walmart?
Thank you!
