Some of the most difficult things to organize, especially when they're always on display, are the winter accessories that are worn daily. In this case it's hats, but maybe in your home it's scarves and gloves, either way this creative repurposed, rolling storage idea is simple and quite efficient!
Apartment Therapy reader and Flickr member Heather, put some old apple crates to use by adding simple casters to the bottom. Not only are they versatile storage that can hold practically anything down the road if they decide to change things up, but they serve their purpose quite well!
In our own home we have a large assortment of hats, scarves, gloves and so forth and storage of this manner would work out perfect, especially when it comes to pulling them away from the wall to actually dig through the pile to find what you need! Easy as that. The same method would also be great in the bottom of a bedroom closet for the same types of items!
Do you have a creative storage solution to share with us? Make sure to tag your photo with "apartmenttherapychicago" and we'll be watching!
Thanks Heather!

Shaw's Original Fir...
I find the crate idea a little sloppy. I hung a shoe organizer on the inside of the closet door in my entryway and use that for my scarves, gloves and hats. It makes finding the right ones easier and I just grab and go!
very handy, especially when there is no lighting in the closet. may be sloppy, but it's exactly how my closet looks on a day-to-day basis!
It would work really well for me, but I'm not handy enough to get the wheels onto the crates. I kind of think Heather's a domestic goddess. Maybe she could sell these in stores?
Over the weekend I did away with 2 bins on the top shelf of my closet. I couldn't find a thing. Now my gloves, scarves and hats are well-organized in one of these, which still fits on the shelf:

I think these crates are an invitation to start a random junk pile. Is there some problem hanging things up?
Also the crates look dirty and splintery. I guess I must be grouchy today.
JoanneM -- How do you hang up gloves, exactly?
We use a chest of plastic drawers in the closet to hold scarves, gloves and hats, something like this:

The shoe organizer works for me, too. I work and play outdoors nearly full time, plus I knit, so I have a huge collection of hats, mitts and gloves...Reynaud's and kayaking in cold weather keeps me ever on the lookout for the best handwear. I use three shoe organizers. In one apt. they fit perfectly hanging from the rod. In another a small cubby fit one on each tiny wall. I use the clear ones, each item is clearly visible and makes a great looking collection when kept organized the top down as I'd wear them: hats, scarves/gaiters, gloves and mitts.
