While taking a stroll through our local Crate and Barrel yesterday (we were on a rug hunt), we came across a display piece intended to show off their brightly colored throws. Display they did, so much in fact, we're thinking about making one for our own home. Details after the jump.
With two dogs in the house, our blankets and throws are often made into "nests" so we're always on the lookout for creative ways to store them without tucking them too far out of sight. Though we couldn't recreate this exact look without the help of someone who is knowledgeable in the ways of welding, we think a simple combination of plumbing pipes should do. We've talked about other assorted projects it's perfectly suited for in the past & and we think this time is no exception.
3 pieces combined with elbows to create a "U" shape for each blanket to reside on and then attached at the bottom, what could be more simple than that (besides throwing them over the arm of the couch)?
The floor model stood at roughly 4 feet tall, though you could make your own for whatever size blanket or throw will be adorning it. Have the plumbing associate help you cut the lengths of pipe you require, instead of buying them precut. It should save you some serious cash in the process!
Where do you store your blankets? Would you prefer them to be out of sight, or out for all to see?

Just use flat steel that you can bend into the shape that you want. It wouldn't be too hard to make a mostly square corner. the flat piece could then be screwed into a wooden base. Could in theory look a bit better than using pipes. Or look for gate parts the right size.
Even though the look would be slightly different, you may want to add a small crossbrace (horizontal member) on the sides, between the individual "upside down U's". This will help maintain their upright stance so they don't "spread". Depending on the material used for the U's, this may or may not be necessary.
I'd love to find a way to protect my blankets from our pup! This is a great idea.
Ha ha, it's always funny to see a problem that you've been struggling to solve for a long time!
My armless couch doesn't give the couch arm option, and my cats consider the pile of throws the greatest bed ever; yet I just love/need throws when I'm watching TV and movies!! Plus they're pretty :)
However, I have absolutely no idea how to build one of these. Pipes seem like it would be a giant piece of furniture. Does anyone else have any suggestions, dumbed down a little if possible for a not-so-handy person such as myself?
mostly my throws end up as tents & forts for my 7 yr-old :o)
lean an old ladder against the wall.... same outcome... i got mine for $15 from an antique store. it has paint spatter on it and i love it!
Boy, there are so many coincidences around my life and the internet today.
I have been trying to come up with a solution to store the blankets I use for the times I am wanting to curl up and take a nap on my couch. They end up in my bedroom closet.
Anyhow, that could be done with so many different materials. Copper pipes, old chair backs, as someone mentioned ladders, etc. Right on. AT comes through with another inspiration to carry into my own home.
We use this towel holder for our bath towels but could also see it's use for blankets or dishtowels. Plus, it's only $15.

Funny... I've seen that display. And, I just received the CB2 towel rack yesterday. (It might be too short for blankets though)
