I am in the market for a new media console. Practicality is key, but I am also a sucker for a nice vintage piece. You can just barely make out my current "media console" in the fifth photo here: an old Ikea locker that is covered and lacquered with Italian paper.
Lots of people find this piece really interesting, but in all honesty, I am just tired of it. Therefore, as of late, I have been doing a lot of console research. I am inspired by mid-century modern design, and am looking mostly for a classy way to hold and display my record collection, with modern convenience. Here are a few retro-esque pieces I found: some within my budget, and some not so much, but fun to look at nonetheless!
1. Draper Media Console from Urban Outfitters, $249
2. Grid Media Console from CB2, $499
3. Marin 58” Media Console from Crate and Barrel, $999
4. Sussex Low Console from Design Within Reach, $1995
5. Hudson Media Console from West Elm, $399
6. Stockholm from Ikea, $329
7. Calligaris Horizon Buffet from All Modern, $2810
8. Thomas Wold Credenza from Thomas Wold via Design Public, $3990
9. Dandelion Graphic Console Stretched from Iannone Design, via 2modern.com, $3400

i just moved and bought this from target http://www.target.com/Room-Essentials-Wide-Stand-Doors/dp/B00362CQCY/ref=sc_qi_detaillink
under $100!
It's exhausting to find one that works perfectly.
I've drawn up plans to build my own. I figure it'll be way easier.
bodicegoddess I agree, I've been trying to find one that works but doesn't break the bank...so far no luck.
Got a beautiful MCM teak credenza for this purpose recently on Craigslist for $50! Steal of the century given that new piece start at $300 if they're made of MDF.
Check the thrift stores. I found a gorgeous walnut MCM credenza at the Salvation Army store for $14.95. It houses my TV on top, and DVR, WII, and bar inside the cabinets and drawers.
Take a look at the Willoughby TV stand at http://tinyurl.com/3v2suk7.
Wow the willoughby TV stand looks great for the $
I love this look. But, you can also create it from a buffet. http://www.decorellaknox.com/2012/07/dining-room-buffet-into-media-stand.html
