Dante McCarthy lives in an old Spanish style apartment, where there are still original design features like little desk alcoves and built-in cabinetry. I love that she uses this space for her typewriter.
1. Emily Henson's working typewriter had its own table in addition to a spot on the living room floor so that her children can type on it.

3. Kathleen and Maurizio filled their contemporary Italian inspired home with vintage pieces. This typewriter was on display in their guest room.
4. Nan and Michael's apartment is filled with creative vices; paintings, illustrations, books, and this awesome blue typewriter.

Several of my friends have had these in their homes for years; the charm wore off for me eons ago. Same with old telephones; not cute when you've seen them in the homes of about 10 of your friends.
One sits in our guest room... sometimes guests type up kind words on it for us to find later :)
I just got rid of mine last week. It's charming until you realize how much space it takes up and how pointless it is :)
Oh, what a serendipitous post! I just bid and won an ebay listing for an Olivetti Underwood typewriter. And as it was an impulse bidding, I was feeling some regret that I won the item. But now I feel like it was meant to be!
Why? Do you also display vintage power tools?
I have a Remington rand in my foyer. Gets used everyday by my wife and I as we type little notes to each other and the world. It's become a sort of house diary. Friends and family use it as well to leave notes...love it.
I have two, a 1929 LC Smith and a 1954 Olivetti. Both are functioning.
Old typewriters are not for everyone. Car obsessed folks may collect vintage cars; hunters may collect vintage firearms; cooking enthusiasts may collect 1950s Sunbeam appliances. Collecting old typewriters is an extension of my interest in writing, and in typography. To me, an old Mixmaster is just an old appliance, but a typewriter? A typewriter is romance.
I have my grandmother's proudly on display. She used to encourage me to type up stories and poems to share. I wanted desperately to be a journalist and write like her. I hope my kids will enjoy it as much as I did.
Oh Bx, you are after my heart!
elliosl, my oldest typewriter belonged to my great aunt, and was left to me by my dad. I think your kids will enjoy your grandmother's.
Today's old typewriter is tomorrow's "brick" cellular telephone.
If you like for retro looks OK. If you use it good for you. I find this post kind of ironic on the site that preaches to edit, throw out what you don't use, combine beauty with utility etc .
I love the idea of an old typewriter. I think it would be fun to get to write letters to loved ones. Forget the emails and send some snail mail with fun typing in it!
ljgfromof--hence the advertising. You'll get used to it.
I think the typing notes is cute. But displaying something utilitarian just cuz isn't that enticing.
I love old typewriters, and I have a great one- but I haven't put it out because I guess I don't really see the point. I need all the deskspace I have (and then some), and it's just not functional. Bx, I think I agree with you.
