Years ago I used to live in a studio where I had but a single balcony window. It was my first residence out of college, and it was a labyrinth of gloomy rentals that all looked into a common space, seemingly designed by Eastern European Communist gulag architects. Living there for but a year, I learned how important having a window is. Even a fake window...or in this case, the recreation of shadows and light through a window created by the
Reveal Light projection system. It can even simulate trees blowing in the wind, so you can pretend your econo-rental studio of depresso mole-like living conditions has something going for it. Going on sale in April (no price yet). [via

This designer (Adam Frank) also has some nice oil lamps that cast interesting shadows of trees ~~ not as drammatic as the window pane light, but more intimate.
