Back when I was renting, I used the same trick to hide a utility box. (I think that's what they're called? Gray box with a door that hides various switches.) We may have used a small finishing nail though ... But canvases are great because they are so lightweight and easy to put up/take down.

Yeah ... I hid my utility box (which was right in the middle of my landing strip!) with a large mirror.

Also, my intercom still works, but looking at it drives me nuts, so I put floating shelves on that wall, and the intercom box now gets nestled amidst a bunch of framed photos, candleholders etc ... you don't notice it as much.

I have a phone jack at eyelevel on my kitchen wall and this will be a wonderful way to disguise it. Thanks so much for this post.

That looks great Mama! I am always looking for ways to "hide ugly" in our rental.
Like ridge, our utility box is right near our entry way. Recently, we installed several coat hooks just above the box. With our Fall/Winter coats and jackets now hanging there, our outerwear is conveniently located next to the front door, you don't see the utility box (which we've only needed to access twice in two years) and we freed up some much-needed closet space in the process.

pretty cool. So I was thinking, if you need access to the intercom but hate its ugly mug, you could install the canvas on a hinge so that you can flip it open when you need to use the intercom…

I once hung a huge mirror from an old creepy medicine cabinet in a bathroom in a house we rented. It stuck out a few inches from the wall so the mirror gave the wall a nice multidimensional look.
