Biodegradable, non-toxic, phosphate- and SLS-free are some of selling points for Earth Friendly Products, a line of over 60 household cleaning products. We recently tested three of these products, tackling such challenges as kitchen grease and fabric stains. Read about our experiences using Parsley Plus All Surface Cleaner, Everyday Stain & Odor Remover, and Window Kleener with Lavender after the jump.
Earth Friendly Products calls this "something for those of us who want an alternative to orange based all-purpose cleaners." Made from purified water, coconut-based surfactant, and parsley essence, this biodegradable, non-toxic cleaner is suggested for use on counter tops, ovens, appliances, floors, ceramic tile and myriad other surfaces. Parsley Plus is also advertised as free of harsh fumes and gentle on skin.
Performance: We tested this in the kitchen, using it to clean the toaster oven, stove top, counter, and sink. It quickly and thoroughly cut through grease and dust and did not leave any residue. We appreciated its cleaning power and imagine some people would like the fresh parsley scent. Unfortunately, however, one of us is highly sensitive to fragrance and found Parsley Plus irritating. We therefore won't be using it again in our household, but would recommend it to those with less delicate nasal passages.
Made from purified water, enzymes, ethanol, coconut-based surfactant, and lemon oil, this is billed as a cleaner for "organic laundry stains, fabric stains, carpet stains and odors caused by food, dirt, urine and other natural waste by-products." It's biodegradable, non-toxic, and reportedly works well on everything from grass to wine, tomatoes, blood, grease, and ink.
Performance: It sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? Alas, in our experience, it was. We tested it on three 30-minute old stains on cotton fabric – tomato sauce, olive oil, and mud. Following the directions on the bottle, we saturated the stains for 5 minutes. After unsuccessfully trying to remove each stain, we reapplied the cleaner for several hours. Still no luck. We'll give this a try this on fresh stains (as well as pet odors, if the "opportunity" presents itself), but for now we are unimpressed.
Earth Friendly Products refers to its Window Kleener as a dust-resistant, non-filming, and non-streaking cleaner for windows, mirrors, and other hard surfaces. It is made from purified water, lavender oil, ethanol, and coconut-based surfactant.
Performance: We tested Window Kleener on a bathroom mirror and found ourselves comparing it to our usual glass cleaner: vinegar. Unlike vinegar, Window Kleener smells amazing, and if you enjoy the scent of lavender, you might like this regardless of how well it works. It did get the job done, but with slightly less sparkle than plain old vinegar. Although we plan to stick to our cheap and simple, albeit less fragrant, staple, we'd recommend Window Kleener as a good commercial solution.
