Bed: Danny Seo Natural Care Model 1
Manufacturer: Simmons
Retail Price: $1,300 - $1,700 for Queen with split base
Danny is good in bed! As a friend of Danny's, I was at first a little afraid to spend a month reviewing one of his beds. He's awesome, but just because his name's on it, didn't necessarily mean that it would be an awesome bed. Branded situations like this give me pause. And who wants to ruin a friendship? Happily, from the get go we both loved this bed, and it's one of the few that has earned a double thumbs up.
Sleep Experience
• Excellent
I was very surprised by the comfort of this bed. I didn't read up on the bed when we started the month, and — for a week — I was totally convinced that it was a "sprung" bed. Why? Because foam can be warm and it also has a more solid feel. Our Model One was cool and very soft in a deep way, which I really liked. This does not act or feel like a foam "brick."
Over the month, Sara and I both loved getting into bed and slept very well through the night. Our Model One has a firm, foamy topper, which then allows your body weight to sink well into the mattress, leaving your feet a bit higher than your hips and chest (which is just right for your posture). Undoubtedly, the pairing of this thick mattress with the box spring adds to the cushiony depth.
Over the year so far, I've come to LOVE and feel the necessity for foundations and box springs. Platform beds just don't come close.

Construction
• Very Good
Since Danny's name is on these beds, Simmons clearly worked hard to make these green — and they did a good job. Construction is very sturdy, and the materials used are much greener than conventional beds. Being 100% green is a real challenge, both for price point and for comfort (as 100% green latex can be hard to work with), and Simmons chose to make these beds accessible by focusing on comfort.
Accordingly, the materials are a mix of green and non-green, but you do feel good about this bed. It's way better than average. Here's the breakdown:
Naturally Derived Top Panel Fabric
• Cultivated wood fiber is partially sustainable and Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified.
Natural Rubber Tree Based Latex
• Special blend is derived from milk sap of a rubber tree (65%).
• Sourced from sustainable, renewable and protected rubber tree plantations.
• Special blended latex is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified.
Soy Enhanced Support Base Foam
• Soy is added to our base foam as an environmentally friendly and sustainable source.
Foundation
• Wood used in our foundations is typically sourced from companies who participate in the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.

Price
• Very Good
I give this bed a VG rating on price because I feel it hits the sweet spot for people wanting to spend a little bit more for a really good bed, but not too much. Mind you, the Model One, which we slept on, is the low end model, and there are two more rungs above this one.
When asked how much you should expect to spend on a really good bed in an interview last week, I replied $1,300 - $1,500. While you can certainly get beds for less, it's very hard to get a really good bed for less, and while you can CERTAINLY spend more, this seems to me the natural cutoff right now in the industry.
Do you sleep on a Danny Seo Simmons? If yes, please let me know in the comments how it's going for you.

White Enamel Four-P...
love this whole bed testing thing! Will you test
Westin Hotles" Heavenly Bed"? Every month I
look forward to your new bed......
I'd like to get more info from you on this "foundation" / box spring question. I've only used platform beds since I made my first one in high school back in 1990. Do box springs really make a difference? They just seem like a hard platform to me. Does it make more of a difference in foam mattresses than sprung ones? I do not want to go back to a bed that you have to climb up to just so I can retain storage underneath. Thanks for your insight on this (and matresses in general). I'm a big fan of this segment.
I'd really like to hear about the "bounce factor" of this mattress, i.e., does it bounce when one of you shifts position in the night? Does having the split box spring help with this problem?
Please test the King's Down Body System bed...I have one of these (already 5 years old) but I love it. Looks kind of similar to the Danny Seo bed you just tested but would like to know your experience.
This is a recycled post. This was seen on AT about three weeks ago.
I, too, am interested in what difference a box spring means for a foam mattress. My husband and I have a foam mattress (a cheap Costco brand that we very much like!), but do not use a box spring. It seems that more and more bed designs are moving away from requiring them and, frankly, I haven't really understood what difference they would make for a foam mattresses.
We're preparing to move, however, and will likely have more space in our next home, so more bed purchases will be in our future. I'd love to know the difference you've found the box spring to make.
Thanks for this series!
Actually this is not a recycled post. They are reviewing beds and they reviewed the Natura bed in early February.
I've checked the Danny Seo mattresses out when I was looking for a new mattress. Most of his mattresses are far from green and I am sure that is fine for many people. My problem with this is that Danny Seo sells himself as a green lifestyle guru which probably makes these mattresses appear "greener." This just make him look like a sell out to me.
I would also like to add that a friend of Danny Seo's should probably not be the one reviewing this mattress. Sorry to get on my soapbox, but I feel someone needs to put that out there...
After months of research, I just bought the version of this mattress they sell at Crate and Barrel and am loving it--have never slept so well. Mine is on a DWR platform bed and it works great, plus I feel good about being at least partically organic. Highly recommended!
Nice to see the split foundation. My daughter recently bought a custom mattress and had to order a split foundation because queen box springs won't make it around the bend in the stairs.
My husband and I bought the king size version of this bed mid-last year - after 15 years on a cheap beautyrest. We love it! While searching, my husband was not a fan of the foam beds. So, when the salesman said this had foam...we could not believe it. You can not tell at all. In terms of movement on the mattress as you shift in sleep - you do not really feel a "bounce" back effect. It is a comfortable bed. We love it and highly recommend it. Whichever mattress you buy - make sure to take good care of it...vacuum the top every time you change sheets - helps with the longevity of the mattress.
Own one since 2009. Mine is a firm, king size mattress used on a platform bed but I still find it too soft. Wanted to return it initially as I like to sleep on a firmer surface, but somehow was too late in doing so. So glad I stuck with it. It was a blessing to sleep on it during my first pregnancy last year. I had severe morning sickness and lower back pain and this mattress was the only surface I could tolerate. Never had a backache since I owned this mattress. It does not really have a bounce back effect but you do feel it if someone moves if you are close enough. It does sink in quite a bit if you sit in it, but sleeping is great.
I'd be careful of a Simmons. We bought one in 2006 and it didn't last three months before getting sleep divots. Those became 2 1/2" deep pits after two years and the bed was understandably very uncomfortable. We were finally able to get a replacement under the warranty last year. The new bed is so far better, but after about six months it too is getting saggy. Unfortunately our model isn't flippable. So we will probably have to replace it in a few years when we can afford it.
Daylight-the post from 3 weeks ago was for the Natura Bed, not the Danny Seo.
I am really enjoying the mattress reviews. So glad to see that AT is testing the Danny Seo's mattress. We bought the Simmons natural care mattress in 2008 when it first came out. It came with a box spring but since we had a platform bed we didn't use the boxspring which was problematic because the mattress became too soft. But we didn't want the extra 18" height on our bed. We read that to solve this problem we could use plywood over the slats of the platform bed and lay the mattress on top of the plywood. That helped with the firmness. So I don't know if that is proper alternative to a box spring. I would like to know if the box spring is really essential for a foam mattress. Also, the firmness would be fine when I first lay on it but then half through the night I would feel like I'm sinking into a hole. Is that normal for a foam mattress? Or is my mattress considered worn out already after 3 years of use?
I think you should review a Flobed, too. They seem very customizable so it would be interesting to compare them to these other latex/memory foam beds.
Maxwell, Are you truly sleeping on the floor? I'm sorry if I am missing something, honestly haven't read though each mattress set update as we are a bit cash deprived, a new mattress is on our Want list, not quite on the Needs list yet, But.
Where's the metal frame? Is the box OK on the floor like that? Is it better that way? (the mattress, not the Other thing)
box spring vs. platform. i think it depends on the mattress and bed. i've had great box spring mattresses but have had a platform bed for the last several years which is very, very comfortable. some mattresses require box springs but not all box springs are well made. in fact there have been a lot of complaints lately that most box springs are now cheaply made, using inferior materials & therefore provide poor support (check out all the complaints online about the s brands). similarly, not all platforms beds provide a good foundation. you just have to match up the bed and the mattress. typically foam and latex mattresses work well on solid platforms. i'm currently using a case study platform bed w/ a latex mattress and am very satisfied.
Are you going to try some type of air bed, such as the Sleep Number? I have one that is 15 years old, and have loved it, but it is time for a new one. Unfortunately, I have seen mixed reviews on them now, so don't know if the quality has gone downhill. Would love to see you review one of those, or their competitor, Comfortair.
I have this bed - but another model and I love it.
Have not had any problems with it at all - it's extremely comfortable & there is less movement across the bed when one person moves. It's like a big (supportive) marshmallow.
I've had it for about 4 or 5 months now and it's still in great shape.
I have a platform bed (w/drawers) and I do use the box spring (split) - I mostly wanted the height addition.
We just bought this mattress and are waiting for it to be delivered, so I'll keep you posted. Suffice it to say that, even before reading this post, it was the one in the store I lay down on and didn't want to get off of. It was a little more than we planned to spend but I literally BEGGED my husband to take it. Can't wait to actually start sleeping on it.
We have been following your blog and are ready to take the plunge for this bed, but cannot figure out which one exactly you tested. Could you provide the model number and/or if it was the firm or plush model? The Model 1 comes in two types and we do not want to purchase the wrong bed. Thank you!
Anyone know where you can try this bed in NYC? The website is not any help.
I would also love a more thorough post on the box spring question.
Yes, please tell us which exact bed you tested. Every store that sells them has a different name for them, and none mentioned Danny Seo.
Where in NYC can you find them?
@Milo and Scazza
So through a lot of research I finally decided that I think the Simmons Bedgebury Forest Euro Top Plush is the one that was tested.
I think this is the one because 1) it is the lower end model, which is mentioned in this post and 2) it is the softer of the two lower end models and matches the picture in the post. (The firm model has a solid, non patterned top). We ordered ours from US-Mattress.com, since there are not any local stores that carry them. It has yet to arrive, but we are looking forward to it!
Good luck!
I am currently mattress shopping and this is very helpful! Apparently, I have to drive to Cincinnati and then Columbus, IN to test out this Simmons and the Natura matterss, but it's worth it!
When are you gonna test the Vera Wang mattress? I tried that one at the store a couple years ago and really liked it. My husband didn't though :P
This is a great site, very happy to have found it! My husband and I are currently mattress shopping after only 3 years with our current innerspring mattress. It was a Kathy Ireland brand, and though comfortable at first, I now wake up daily in pain. I have lower back and hip issues and really require something firm and supportive. We are looking mainly towards a memory foam mattress this time around and are really taking our time and trying do thorough research. I will be looking for this mattress in my area to test, though will probably have to travel a bit to find a retailer who sells it. Was wondering if you would consider testing the new Serta iComfort. We looked at these this past weekend and was one of our top picks at first along with some Tempur-pedic models. Sleeping hot is definitely an important issue for us since my husband HAS to have it cool. Thanks for creating a great site that will benefit a lot of people!
Thanks for doing the comparison study, but please, please, mention whether you have to flip the mattress and how often. As you get older, if you live alone, flipping a mattress becomes more difficult.
Do you not use a mattress pad cover between the mattress and your sheets?
@wordgrl - i don't think they're designing new mattresses that flip. The layers are closer to the top and they're designed to stay in one place..
Really great review! I work with a mattress review site, http://www.qmattresses.com/ and they take in-depth reviews like yours to help other customers looking for comprehensive mattress reviews. They would really appreciate your review on this mattress!
