Bed: The Pillow Plus with Metal Foundation
Manufacturer: Keetsa
Retail Price: $699 (queen mattress) + $229 (metal platform)
For the months of August and September we slept on our second to last bed of the year - an eco-friendly mattress from Keetsa, a new company that is striving to simplify the bed buying business as well. Bottom line? This bed gave us a great sleep at an excellent price and we loved the good feeling its eco DNA gave us. It's our top recommend at the affordable end of the price spectrum.
Keetsa is a four year old company out of San Francisco that is trying to nail the eco bed market. Family owned, its goal is to offer an excellent limited selection so that customers are not overwhelmed, eco-friendly solutions (not 100%, but as close as they can get), great service and easy delivery (their beds come in boxes which you can roll out of the store and put in a car or taxi). The box method also allows them to reduce shipping costs and carbon footprint, which passes savings on to you.
Sleep Experience
• Excellent
We slept very well on this bed. While it wasn't a "notable" sleep or one with any bells and whistles, we both found it supportively firm with a nice soft top that made it cuddly and gentle on our bones. We had no issue with "hot sleeps" due to the foam construction, which was great. While Sara likes a firmer sleep, I would have liked it a bit softer, but I wouldn't complain. This was a bed that won us both over in equal ways.

The Pillow Plus is on the more affordable end of Keetsa's range but it employs their full quiver of eco-solutions, including their mixed memory foam, BioFoam, an organic cotton cover and a green tea infusion that helps with "long-lasting natural odor control." This is a pretty stripped down eco offering, however, without any fancy or expensive ingredients (like wool, hemp or more eco-memory foam) and there was almost no off-gassing (a little bit on install, but none after 24 hours).
Perhaps the two most notable features of the Pillow Plus: the way in which it came all rolled up in a box and we were able to watch it "grow" in our bedroom and the simple metal foundation that they provided.
As you can see in the video above, the ability for a mattress to expand into its full shape is super cool, and it allows for easy delivery and even self service pickup. However, it also means that you have to do-it-yourself, so we spent a good deal of time installing our new bed, which is typically done by a delivery service (but DIY is more green).
We also liked the "camp-style" metal foundation which was easy to install and to get into our apartment. While it brought with it no visual style, it did provide a lot of room underneath for storage.
From the Keetsa website:
• The Core: iCoils are independent coils that support every part of your body with the perfect amount of supple and responsive flex. Independent operation means less transfer between sleep partners for better sleep.
• The Comfort Top: Nicely cushioned pillow top instantly welcomes you to bed with layers of body conforming High Density Memory Foam, a recyclable material.
• BioFoam™: Memory Foam made with a blend of natural and synthetic materials. We replace portion of the synthetic with plant oil, to reduce the dependency on chemical and emissions of harmful off-gassing.
• All-Natural Ingredient: EverGreen™, made from all-natural green tea, is embedded into the memory foam for long-lasting natural odor control.
• The Cover: Unbleached, 100% Organic Cotton cover with channel quilting that is stuffed with wool and micro fibers to keep the cover breathable and more comfortable.
Price
• Excellent
The Pillow Plus not only won high points for being in a small club of beds that came in under $1,000, it took the top prize for delivering a great night's sleep in an eco package with a frame for the LOWEST PRICE OF ANY OF OUR BEDS TESTED THIS YEAR (including IKEA!). With frame and delivery, the whole package was just over $900, which is pretty incredible. This would have to be our top recommend at the affordable end of the spectrum.
Do you sleep on a Keetsa bed? If yes, please let me know in the comments how it's going for you.

White Enamel Flatwa...
Glad to hear that your Keetsa was comfortable, Maxwell. We bought the slightly less expensive, firmer Keetsa queen at the recommendation of the merchant, given that my bf has back problems. Although I loved the convenience of having a bed in a box delivered to our new apartment before our furniture arrived from California (we tested out the Keetsa and purchased it in Berkeley and had it delivered to NYC), and the eco-friendliness, the bed was sooooo uncomfortable. We woke up achy and feeling almost bruised every morning. Not fun. After several months of discomfort, we purchased a not inexpensive memory foam topper from a different company , and finally were able to get a decent night's sleep. So...guess it depends on which mattress you get. We're not princess and the pea types, but would never purchase the firm Keetsa again. Guess that pillow top really makes a difference.
We have been sleeping on the Keetsa Tea Leaf Classic for the last two years, this one is a step up from the Pillow Plus, but still a mid-range mattress at $1200 for a queen.
We are absolutely in love, it has a memory foam topper that's built in to the mattress, but it is still fairly firm. I like softer mattresses, but they tend to give me back pains, so this fits in as the 'softest firm mattress' we could find.
So far, it's kept it's shape surprisingly well. We are really happy with the quality as well as the 'eco-ness', we didn't notice hardly any off gassing. We recommend Keetsa to everyone, I especially love how simple their choices are, we had spent hours in mattress stores, and after the 20th bed, it's hard to tell which one you like. Also, their staff is really helpful without being pushy or sales-y, so I felt really good about the purchase afterwards.
This may seem crass, but beds are for more than sleeping...not the least of which other purposes is sex. In my years and various sleep surfaces, I have noticed that some are good for sleeping, but not so much for sex, and others (particularly a futon) are the opposite. Any thoughts there, or are we too American to discuss it?
I have slept on the Queen Keetsa Tea Leaf Classic since Spring of 2008, and love it! My husband came into the picture after I bought it and he enjoys it too. We live in San Francisco, so I tested the mattresses in their showroom, they were very helpful in advising on the mattress types. The install was easy to complete on my own. There was a smell initially, but within a days time the smell was all gone. We are looking to upgrade to a king size bed from Keetsa next year!
I bought my Keetsa bed a few months ago after being rear-ended and suffering whiplash, my old bed just didn't cut it anymore. Everything from the purchasing experience in the store (no pushy sales guy) to the fun of watching my bed "grow", the Keetsa mattress has been the best bed I've ever bought. Plus, the additional warranty coverage? Awesome!! Also, being that I move so much, it's nice to know I can fold my mattress and not worry about it being ruined during the moving process. Oh, and did I mention that sleeping on this mattress has been absolutely delightful? I love the fact that I'm not inhaling toxic off-gassing fumes either. Why aren't all other mattresses like Keetsa?
Keetsa! Keetsa! Keetsa!
(I only wished that I had had the extra $$ for the bamboo sheets...)
I've had the pillow plus since june 2008. I bought it because i needed a bed ASAP and the store was down the street. I've kept it and loved it because it is a wonderful nights sleep and even three years in, i don't wake up sore. I recommend this to everyone.
we've been sleeping on a keetsa for a couple years. we bought one of the tea leaf mattresses. in the store it felt wonderful but at home i found it way too firm, like LiliZ. after a few weeks we ended up buying one of the "comfort layers"--i think the "luxurious" one--and that changed everything. i was instantly in love with the bed, and still am. so our purchase ended up being a lot more expensive, but we sleep better than ever before, so it's been worth it.
I've had a Keetsa since 2008 and its held up great -- excellent sleep and so convenient for apartment living when you have to move!
Sooo, I have been following the "year in bed" religiously, and relied heavily on it for my mattress decision in June. I moved to a new apartment and got rid of most of my previous furniture to start anew, including the mattress. I am lucky to be in NYC, and was able to try a Keetsa, which almost had me sold. I was concerned about the foam though- worried that it would be too hot, and was worried about off-gassing. In the end I went with a NaturaWorld mattress- their Serene Lux. After being told that I would have may mattress in two weeks, and then waiting over 2 MONTHS for it, I was ready to tell them to forget it, refund my money, and I would just go down to soho and return home same day with my mattress from Keetsa. Just when I was ready to do that, NaturaWorld scheduled my delivery. I DO love the feel of the latex, and I LOVE the smell of the wool in the topper. I am sleeping great. But, I am still a bit frustrated with the company. I decided to also get one of their washable wool comforters... and am going on 2 months of waiting for that too. The worst part is that they lead you to believe they can deliver faster. I began to wonder if it was a scam (they took my money when I ordered.... and then were very slow to answer emails or calls). So, for those of you perhaps making a mattress decision, take this into consideration. I would go Keetsa if I had to get a new mattress now.
is that blond hair I see on you, Maxwell?
beware of GREENWASHING! I have three of the these mattresses and they have been a good value for the money. I bought the less expensive option, which definitely needed the extra pillowtop to make it comfortable. However, I must point out the this is barely a green product. The compression shipping method is great, but the foam is almost all petroleum derived and the non-petroleum part is very small. I resent that they slap a "green-tea" label on it and call it green and try to fool the consumers. A natural latex mattress is the real green alternative, not these Chinese made imports that off-gas nasty stuff. I really resent the marketing, they are greener than Serta-Sealy but not green
If you have a platform bed you don't need the metal or wooden form underneath it.
I've had the pillow plus in queen size for about 3 yrs and love it. They gave me a 10% discount when I went back a few months ago to get a twin for my infant son. I'll be ordering a full size, also in pillow plus, for my 4 yr old who is upgrading from an ikea toddler bed and mattress. I greatly appreciate this company, from the product to service and delivery.
to address greymase's question . . . these mattresses (and any memory foam i guess) are not very good for anything besides sleeping. your knees just sink in too much. on the plus side, the frame is really high and the mattress is super thick so it's pretty comfortable if one of you is standing on the floor.
I have the Keetsa Cloud mattress and foundation that I have slept on for a little over a year and absolutlely love it. I have a bad back and this really has made a huge difference in the sleep I am able to get. I do find it sleeps a bit hot but nothing too distressing for me.
@spammeg, your comment raises a question -- can that mattress be re-packed down to an iin-box state for moving?
When did mattresses get to be so expensive? What's causing this high price.
maxwell -
it's a "recommendation," not a "recommend."
yeow.
Agree 100% with lapin's comment about greenwashing. Any memory foam is pretty toxic- for the planet, and for you :(
I'm with Bella -- why is your hair blonde, Maxwell?
I was so impressed with the review I actually called their NYC store to ask about country of origin, since they don't have that anywhere on their website. China, China, China...are there any matresses made in US anymore? Canada?
How "green" is it to ship something clear across the world?
could this be used as a stowaway bed? Can it be folded and stored or is it a pain to fold?
Memory foam is not green. It is not healthy. Adding some nice smelling goodies does not make it green or healthy. Keetsa is NOT a natural matress.
Shipping domestically in a tiny box does not make it green.
And jess13, many, many matresses are made in the US.
JudiAU, thanks for pointing that out. I'm currently saving for a WinnDom mattress manufactured in a converted school in Hopewell, Virginia -- not quite two hours from where I live and location of my first public library job. Their processes are both green and local, and I intend to support them even though the model I'm buying is about twice the price of the Keetsa.
Maxwell, we're waiting to hear why you dyed your hair. Answers, please!
Sounds very similar to my memory foam I got this year in Canada from Costco. I loved the easy unpacking and in fact left it all boxed until I was moved into my new apartment. I agree that the base is a little boring but very functional. Costco had a similar version on sale for $599.
Wow the guy in the video seems pretty clueless. I guess he didn't RTFM.
88% polurethane, made in China. Enough said. Greenwashing at it's best.
To HEAVEN123 : Don't you drive? Don't you use to public transportation? What are you wearing? Where is it made from? Don't you eat meat via mass production? Don't you use soap and water to wash your clothes and dishes? Don't you use instant paper bag and PVC bag for your convenience? Don't you take a shower everyday? If you're in those condition then how you can say that made in China is not a green? Who broke the Kyoto Protocol? Which country is the most harmful country that make this planet polluted? Yes, it is you who lives in America. Don't blame other 3rd party country. Be shame on you!
@steven austin
Convincing breakdown. I kind of figured that was going to be the answer to the question "how green can shipping something from halfway around the world be?" After all, it's not like they're airmailing this to you.
These mattress are made with no oversight in China, the most polluted country in the world.
They are trucked to a ship, shipped around the world to the US, then trucked to a warehouse, then trucked to their stores. I think its kind of a no brainer that it isn't eco-friendly. Logically, something made here travels a LOT less miles. They claim their foams emit no VOC's, but there is a strong odor. That is a VOC, and when you ask them for a VOC report, its 5 years old, from Korea, and not even for the foam they use now. When you buy this mattress you money goes to China. It leaves the country. Come on people, wake up! There are lots of great products, reasonably priced, made right here in the USA, with real certifications. If you buy one of these, shame on you.
