Q: I was wondering if anyone has experience with the Fisher-Price Newborn Rock 'n Play Sleeper. I just stumbled upon it on Amazon and was amazed by all the glowing reviews. Is it safe? I had been considering using the Arms Reach co-sleeper for the first months, but this is much smaller, less expensive, and more portable. I'm wondering if it might be a good, if not better option than the Arms Reach.

I was planning on buying this too but it's disappeared from Amazon. Was it involved in their recent recall?
I was also lured in by the glowing reviews. I have a 5 week old and he has yet to really sleep in it. He'll sleep for about an hour or so, but sleeps best in the bed with me. It is portable and easy to bring from room to room, but I think he'll be better suited for it when he's older. It works best as something to set him in if I need to shower, safer to me than a bouncer. Also, when we first brought him home, he was in the 6 lb. range, and I thought he was WAY too small for it. I'm wishing now I got something different for next to the bed.
Friends of mine used it from day one and they LOVED it. The baby slept in it and was a great sleeper from the start. They had purchased a co-sleeper and never used it. Hope that helps.
We have this! It was honestly one of the best purchases of baby gear that we ever made. My daughter (now almost 7 months) was (and, ok, still sort of is) a terrible sleeper, and this was the only place--with the exception of our arms!--that she would sleep for several months. She hated lying flat, so this was great because it kept her slightly elevated. Also, it kind of "hugs" the baby, which I think she really liked. I kept it next to my bed and loved that it rocked. If she stirred during the night, I could often just reach over, half asleep, and rock her back to sleep again. My favorite thing though is that it is incredibly easy (like completely and utterly goof-proof) to fold up, and it folds pretty flat, so it was simple to throw in the car for a weekend away or a trip to grandma's house. I liked that she was able to have her same "bed" whether she was at home or away. (note: it would be too bulky for plane travel though--but it's great for cars.) The one thing: Fisher Price advertises it as an infant seat as well but I did not find it great for daytime use. It's too bed-like. But it's awesome for night..esp for the price!
okay. best baby purchase i've EVER made. my son was ALWAYS sick with congestion/croup/ear infections/colds, etc. and we spent LOTS of nights in the recliner bc he could not breathe lying down in his crib or my bed. i purchased this when he was about 2-3 months old and it seriously was a LIFE SAVER! he would sleep {almost} all night without being woke up by his own congestion. seriously, it was the absolute best thing i have ever bought! i gave it to a friend when haden out grew it and now her son with acid reflux uses it and she loves it! & my sister-in-law just got one from target the other day for her little boy {he's got a little cold} and they finally are getting some sleep. it's been a life saver!!!
I was interested in possibly picking one of these up for our second baby, due in May, so I did a lot of reading. One of the best ways to sort through the reviews on Amazon is starting with the 1-star reviews and trying to figure out if there's a pattern.
The one complaint that came up a few times was the "flat head" issue, which parents can rectify by placing a folded blanket behind the baby's head. I checked out this rocker in the store and the fabric is very thin and the plastic backing very hard, right where the baby's head would be touching. So if you're comfortable using a small cushion behind your baby's head, I'd so go for it. Check for recalls first.
I have the arms reach co-sleeper and love it. I have been using it for 2 1/2 months. It is the perfect height next to my bed. The side pockets can hold diapers, wipe container, extra burp clothes and blankets. The bottom can be used for storage of extra diapers and sheets. It is easy to set up and take down or even light enough to just pick up and move from room to room.
I used the Arms Reach co-sleeper and while it was fine, it wasn't any better than our pack and play (ours has a bassinet). While Arms Reach was smaller, it was an extra $165 that I found we didn't need to spend when the mattress isn't any different than a regular pack and play. I sold our Arms Reach, with the thought that if there is a next time, the pack and play will work fine in our bedroom. Our daughter outgrew the co-sleeper within four months anyway, and most nights she was in bed with us. All that said, if our daughter had reflux or congestion issues, I would have been out looking for something along the lines of the one you are looking at.
Bottom line is, even though we wanted to be as prepared as possible before the baby arrived, we really didn't know what we needed until we met our baby. If I could do it again, I would have used our regular pack and play for the first few weeks to see if we really needed anything else. It's amazing how much "stuff" I thought I needed (and bought) but never used.
I don't want to be the nay-sayer... but, the recline of the sleeper makes me nervous. It looks similar to that of a bucket-style car seat. There has been a study about infants sleeping in car seats and how the angle of the seat can compromise respiration.

I'm sure there is a "degree of elevation" that is safe for babies, but not being sure exactly what that is, I would go with a flat option. We used the bassinet in our pack n' play for our time co-sleeping. Not to mention it still gets used as a travel bed for my 2yo.
I loved mine. My daughter didn't like sleeping flat, and this was fabulous for her for a few months. I also loved that I could take it with us easily wherever we went. It is really only good for a few months, though, because once she got really squirmy and trying to roll over, it wasn't a good place for her to sleep anymore!
this was great for us! perfect next to the bed and with the rockers on the bottom we could gently rock him if he got a bit fussy. i would definitely recommend it especially if your baby has any reflux issues where an elevated head is necessary. in fact we loved it so much we passed it along to friends and it was the first time their little one slept for more than an hour or on mommy :)
I used it with my daughter for the first six weeks and we both loved it. She slept very soundly and made an easy transition to her crib from it.
We didn't have any problems with respiration and actually transferred her back into it when she had a cold at 3 months.
Wow... I can't believe how many people put their babies in cribs and other contraptions to sleep! My interpretation of this contraption is that it's meant to be used for play and naps, not 12 hour long bedtimes.
we swear by the mini convertible arm's reach cosleeper. more convenient than a pack&play, more compact, pulls double duty. we wanted one for our first three kids, but put it off as impractical or a waste. got one for baby four and kicked ourselves for waiting! baby four slept in it (when not in our bed!) for months and then moved a bit further away (still in our room) with it set up as a crib. when she moved to her own room, it stayed in our room for naps away from the other kids. as a bigger 2yo, she still fits in it fine. baby number five is now in it and we're loving it all over again. LOVE that we can have him close without worrying about other kids climbing over him in the night.
ah, the arm's reach has also come in handy for hotels and camping trips.
AWESOME. My little man slept in it up to 3 months. We'd alternate between our bed and this little sleeper. Currently, our baby is in his crib during the nights (almost 5 months now).....however, when my wife is in the shower or getting ready in the morning she always places him in this sleeper. It's good because he's not lying flat and therefore doens't get cranky. He's tilted up slightly so he can relax and see his mom at all times. He'll probably fit up until he's about 6 months.
Bonus: It folds nicely to tuck along a wall, behind a couch, in a closet, etc...
Here's the last time he slept in his sleeper (3 months)
Here's a pretty early photo (3 weeks)
Send me some flickr mail if you have any questions.
we used this as our baby's bed until he was about 4 months old. he now sleeps in his crib at night but I still use the rock and play when I need to take a shower. at first this was a little too big for him (he was 6lbs, 3oz at birth) but we folded up a soft blanket and placed it underneath him to help.
I think this is a great product and very reasonably priced!
We've had this from day 2 and love it. The first night we brought Zoey home from the hospital was awful, we realized she hated sleeping flat on her back and wouldn't have anything to do with the very pricey Ooba Nest bassinet we had purchased for her to sleep in. My mom sent us the link to this and we went and bought it the same day out of desperation. That night Zoey slept very well, and since then as well. She's 2 1/2 months now and still sleeping soundly in it. We'll be transitioning her to her crib very soon but I'll be keeping it for the next baby.
It fits perfectly next to our platform bed and I don't have to get out of bed to get her out. Makes for a very calm and smooth nighttime routine. Would highly recommend this, one of our most valuable baby purchases.

I'm the mom of a 3 week old and this is BY FAR my favorite baby product yet. We use this downstairs during the day for her to nap in. It folds up flat and hardly takes up any room. I had a zillion stitches, too, so it's much easier for me to manage and she's happy to sleep in it. I'm already buying more for pregnant friends. Great product.
This is by far my favorite baby gadget out there. HOWEVER. I just got a very confusing email from Amazon stating that I should check the CPSC's website re: recent recalls on infant sleeping devices - I went to Amazon - and it appears they don't sell this anymore. Very strange. The CPSC alert pertains to those wedge/bolster pillow things - not a product like this. In fact, the Rock n Play is great because the sides are breathable mesh, so heaven forbid a baby did press her face against the side, she could still breathe.
Anyway, my personal experience is that it was awesome. P would not sleep flat, ever, and once we switched her to this bed at 4 weeks or so, she slept there soundly (9-10 hours a night!) until we switched her to her crib when she was 5 months old. She was just getting too big for it.. her little feet were hanging off the end, but she loved it. Like someone else said, I think it made her feel secure because it kind of "hugs".
As far as I can tell, it has not been recalled. It is approved for sleep. In my experience, it was very safe, and quite honestly, a godsend.
