Q: I'm considering buying the NatureMill Plus home composter for my kitchen, but before I do, I wonder if any Re-Nest readers have purchased it and if they could share their experiences with the product? Good? Bad? Worth the money?

I've had mine for over a year now, and still have been unable to get it to make good compost. It resides in the garage now because it is a smelly leaky mess. I would not recommend putting in the house. It does however reduce the amount of food scraps considerably.
It would be difficult to find something small and non-stinky for your kitchen if you eat much in the way of fruit and vegetables! I keep a covered 5-qt pot and must empty it in my outside compost big once or twice a day!
But this site is "apartment" therapy, so an outdoor compost bin might not be possible.
Have you considered a worm bin?

I've had a NatureMill for about 2 years now and I love it. It's reduced my waste by at least 1/2. We keep a small tupperware on the counter for scraps, and when it's full we dump it into the compost. It took about 2 months to get a good batch, and I let it sit for a while in the bottom reservoir to 'cure'. When it's full, I dump it into a bucket I keep on the fire escape outside. I use that on plants, give to friends, gardens, etc... It's very strong compost, better than any fertilizer I've used. The Naturemill only smells when you open the lid, and it's an earthy smell, goes away quickly when you close the lid. If you're not into dirt, then it's probably not for you, but I haven't had a problem with it. You have to start it out with some good dirt, and follow their instructions for what to add, when, how much, etc. Sometimes there are jams, but they usually clear themselves or you can break up chunks with a spoon yourself. Overall, a great investment that I feel good about.
i've had my naturemill pro for at least a year now, and overall i'm happy with it & feel it was worth the investment (living in the bahamas, think: retail cost freight forwarding import duty)
i did have an episode where some little metal latches got bent out of shape, and i found them in the bin below. i emailed naturemill about what happened, with some pix of the metal bits and they explained that some models had had this problem, and immediately sent me 2 replacement latches for free. the customer service was GREAT, but it wasn't so great having to disassemble the dirty stinky latch and replace it myself.
mine doesn't emit any smells or leaks other than when i lift the lid to add more scraps. like someone else said, the smell is earthy not garbagey, and quickly dissipates.
i love it because by composting all my organic waste, my actual garbage doesn't need to be taken out as frequently, and is never smelly!
the naturemill makes it easy to compost and reduce your waste. i highly recommend.
We've had one for about three months. We got it because we have a balcony, but no yard, and we wanted to compost our food scraps rather than throwing them away.
We can't put everything into it. Things like pits are a no-no, also orange rinds, a lot of thick fruit skins, and no corn husks. But the majority of our food scraps do go in.
It does have a distinctive smell, a sort of warm earthy peppery smell. This is most noticeable when you open the cabinet where it is contained. The amount of smell varies, depending on how much fresh food is in there, and also what kind of food. Most of the time, you only really notice it when the cabinet is open. Sometimes it is more noticeable---in which case we usually add a bit of baking soda. It has never really stunk up the whole house, but it does take some maintenance.
For us, this was the only realistic alternative to throwing all of our food scraps into the garbage. So we are happy with it. It takes some maintenance, but not too much. I wouldn't worry at all about leaving it alone while I was out of town.
We bought a dog food bin with castors to store the excess compost in, but we haven't gotten to that stage yet. Our first batch is still curing in the drawer. This part has taken longer than I was led to expect it to.
I used mine alot the first year I got it but then over the winter it gets too cold on my balcony to use it (and too smelly to keep inside) and then it got stuck and I haven't fixed it so it's been languishing for awhile. You have to want to keep up with it. Still, I think it was worth the investment. Really cut down on the amount of garbage we threw out.
I love my nature mill !!! Been using it for about 2 years and have not had any problems with it. We have almost no waste now except for a few plastic wrappers each week. As others recommend, you do have to follow the instructions. They came out with a new version and I am tempted to upgrade.
