The downfall with modern rugs is they can sometimes be out of your budget ballpark. Or it can be hard to rationalize spending a boat load on something that will be smushed with Cheerios, crayons, silly putty... you know the drill. Instead of buying modern, try transforming something old into new again with a little paint!

This IKEA rug had seen better days and was in need of a change. Instead of switching things out to a modern retail find, mom and rug flipper extraordinaire, Belén went to work transforming her floor covering from boring to BLAM!

We spotted her handiwork at Design*Sponge and the bright red numbers instantly caught our attention. As they fade over the years, the rug will simply feel vintage — it's the best of both worlds really. Belén from The Plastic Factory suggests using a primer and paint for the background of the rug and a paint medium for the numbers before putting down the red. Because the material is absorbent, priming first gives the surface a clean (and sealed) slate so the red will stick!

You can check out her full process at The Plastic Factory. ABC's and 123's will always be in style and this is a great way to breathe a little more life into an old or plain rug item.
