One of our least favorite tasks is doing the bookkeeping for our business. We have a number of reasons for detesting this chore but mainly the receipts are illegible due to fading and the date is always hard to find. Did we mention we're also really bad with numbers?! So you can bet when our bookkeeping is caught up, we reward ourselves at home...
Just like Olga, we descend on the couch and bring all of our goodies with us. Reading Olga's Flickr notes, she rewards herself with a group of items that branch out onto the coffee table:
- The first thing we noticed was the DVD, Say Anything (we agree--such a good flick).
- Reading a good book is one of favorite ways to spend the evening in (right after we've cooked a yummy meal for ourselves). Olga's pick--The Taste of Country Cooking.
- A little luxury goes a long way, especially when creating nice home smells. Pictured is a candle from Vie Luxe that gives off the scent of fresh peonies.
- It's always a great feeling to catch up on current reading materials (for Olga, it's Barrons and an instruction manual for a gadget). Just rewarding yourself with time to do the little things that you never get around to is wonderful.
Apartment Therapy readers, what are the simple things you do to reward yourself at home?

My comment has everything to do with [disgusting] bookkeeping and nothing to do with rewarding. I know you didn't ask, but, because of various projects, including rentals, I have a whole lot o' bookkeeping to do. I let it stack up. The handiest trick I use is, while I'm still at the retail counter, I circle on the receipt whatever I will need to find later. As you know, receipts are formatted in many different ways. I get frustrated looking for dates, etc. I always cirlce dates, amounts, and credit card numbers. Sometimes, I circle store names and write on the receipts what I bought or for what projects. If the cashiers seem confused, I tell them it's for my use. Hmmmmm. I think I'll go reward myself.
First, I tune into the "spa" music satellite channel. I make a pot of tea and a plate of yummy treats. I then gather up all of my unread magazines (which always seem to be a lot). Everything goes on a bed tray. I crawl under the covers and have a lovely tea in bed.
Just a tip to help with the faded invoices and receipts - photocopy them! I'd recommend keeping a small stack handy, and once you get enough to fill an 8x11" page, make a copy and file that away. The photocopy won't ink won't fade the way the ink on the receipt does.
Alternatively, you could just scan them and e-file them, by month and use, and save yourself some hassle and some paper.
