Clockwise from top left:
Death By Pink. Go slowly insane in this Hello Kitty House. For rent in Taiwan.
Nerd Alert. the Hobbit Motel, which was, natch, inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's book. Not surprisingly, it is located in New Zealand. Via Flavor Wire.
Nerd Alert II. If the Hobbit hotel got you all hot and bothered, you may also be titilated to hear about this $10 million home on the coast of Queensland, Australia, which was inspired by Star Trek's Starship Enterprise. It has "endless open space" and a theater decorated with a space image taken from the Hubble telescope. Photo: Max Walls International for the Wall Street Journal.
Wilmaaaaa! The Flintstones house from the 60s cartoon has apparently inspired numerous imitations; but this one, in Malibu, was also owned by TV host Dick Clark. This Spring it was on the market for $3.5 million. Via Entertainment Designer.
If you had an architect design you a home based on a book, movie, TV show or cultural phenomenon, what would it be?

Commercial Flour Sa...
Ha! "Go slowly insane" made me laugh! That house is so hideous.
At first I thought the Starship Enterprise place was bunny ears ala Playboy.
The Hobbit place should have gone whole hog and done truly round doors rather than regular doors in round frames.
I've always wanted to live on the Enterprise. But I'll settle for the Death Star or Hogwarts.
And they say money can't buy happiness . . .
Hmm, I'd be tempted by something manor house/castle-ish like in Monarch of the Glen but housekeeping and maintenance would be an issue. Baba Yaga's house on chicken legs would probably be pretty cool, especially if it could actually walk. For years I wanted the 7 dwarfs house from Sleeping Beauty but I think my favourite would be the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse. A nice mashup of the book and movie versions
Off of highway 280 in Hillsborough, California, you can see the "Flintstone House"
http://gocalifornia.about.com/od/californiapictures1/ig/Unusual-Houses/Flintstone-House.htm (hopefully you can open)
I saw it about 20 years back when it was for sell. I was surprised how small it was considering it was in Hillsborough where the houses for for multi-millions of dollars.
I used to love driving by the flintstone house as a kid! I'm glad to see other people feel the same way.
Also, I would give my firstborn to live in a well-made hobbit hole, no joke. The Star Trek house is disappointing, though: it just looks so goofy. If it looked nicer, though, I would totally be into it.
I like the flintstone house best. Stone was an integral part of our remodel too.
Um, Willie Wonka's chocolate factory? Or maybe James' giant peach?
What a fun thing to think about on a hot day.
For me it would be the Swiss Family Robinson's tree house. Not the Disney one, the book one. Or the hollowed out tree in My Side of the Mountain.
Basically, I'd like to live out of doors in the summer, with a somewhat sheltered place to sleep and keep my books and be protected from rain and bugs. And in the winter, inside a cozy space with lots of windows and a fireplace and, also, many bookcases.
Nah I'm holding out for Howl's Moving Castle (Book or Miyazaki versions). Cozy little living space so it's easy to clean; giant and imposing on the outside (opposite of Tardis here) and it goes wherever you want!
Rapunzel's tower, of course. The seven story staircase would be inspired by several AT posts so that they could hold my book collection and leave lots of room for more.
A true hobbit hole house would be amazing and I also love the house in the movie UP! which would be a whole lot easier to reproduce.
Lol, I'd only live in the house from "Up" if it had all of the balloons attached to it, and could fly around the world. :)
Too bad about the Enterprise house. It's gorgeous, but I'd never have thought it was Star Trek-inspired.
I'd love to live in Luna Lovegood's house, or the (first) Burrow. :) All of those fun things going on inside! They might be a bit dangerous to juggles, though. My muggle friends will just have to be careful. :)
How about the Crystal Palace from The Neverending Story? It would be fun to live in there.
Dick Clark's home was more influenced by its placement next to a state park; the rock-formation design is such to camouflage it and integrate it more naturally into the landscape.
I'd like to live in Rainbow Dash's castle in the clouds. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5281/5309100267_ce55aee11f.jpg
That's easy. Pee-Wee's Playhouse.
