- What I Love About My Small Home:
- The garage. I have been tinkering in garage's since I was a little kid and couldn't dream of a place with out somewhere to work. I didn't care how small the living space was as long as I had somewhere to call "shop." Having this space to work, and an Ikea As-Is section near by allowed me to create this little studio home I love so much. I was fortunate that my landlord let me have a little freedom. I was able to paint and build in some of the shelving with out any issues. Combining my love of mid-century design, science fiction and world travels, I have created a place to express my interests and my work, along with the work of others that I enjoy. Even though the place might seem cluttered, a wondering mind will never cease to find something to explore.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- Besides cooking with out setting off the fire alarm, the biggest challenge was dividing the space up in to functional and cohesive areas. Although this is all just one big room, you get the feeling that you have entered multiple spaces. This is due to the ceiling high all-in-one room divider which was the biggest challenge. It serves as my computer desk, book shelf, and media cabinet. With hidden electronic storage and a swiveling tv, it not only provides entertainment from all angles, but a visual showcase as well. For added shelving I built the unit around the wall heater which serves more as my library. I took advantage of the local Ikea As-Is to build my bedframe, intersecting coffee tables, bar, and outside patio which is still in progress. All in all, nothing was too difficult with careful planning and a detailed model in SketchUp.

You have wonderful taste in books :) I'm a bit jealous you have that older copy of the Foundation Series.
At first I loved it, and then I thought it was maybe a bit cluttered, but then I remembered it's TINY! Of course it's going to be a bit cluttered. LOVE the art. LOVE the overall vibe. It's fun, it's got personality, it works.
I would have rather seen a picture of the bathroom or kitchen instead of a picture of books..just sayin'.
Really like this space. Love the colors and jealous of your MCM shelving unit that houses your TV on a swivel even. Jeez! :o) Love the whimsical 'window' dressing. Is that Godzilla devouring his next city!!! Too funny, wonderfully practical and very warm and cozy. Job well done indeed.
This looks quite cluttered to me - but then, the stuff is not my stuff. If it were my beloved stuff, it would probably not look cluttered....
I'd probably lay it out differently. I feel like the "hallway" is a waste of precious space here -- could have been part of the livable space.
I almost need to favorite you just for that lovely selection of William Gibson!
Can I make a request? Can AT proofread the submissions rather than just posting them? It's just better when you don't find spelling and punctuation errors in the submissions.
I love the way you integrated the bed -- I didn't even notice it at first. That's nifty in so small a space, not at all "in your face".
I agree with Tracy333 - would've loved to see bathroom/kitchen instead of a stack of books. We're clicking or not clicking "Favorited" based on your decorating savvy and creativity not your book taste...not that I have a beef with William Gibson or anything. It's just that you only get 5 photos plus a floorplan. Make it count!
That said, I did Favorite this because I really admire all the work that went into making your space a home. The room divider is amazing and the swivel t.v. is genius.
I love the space devider and how much you have packed your personality into the tiny space.
I like how the bed is there, but not really there. Interesting home.
I know everyone has mentioned the TV swivel, but that is so awesome. Before I actually saw the other side, I wondered if you put something interesting to look at, but I love the pattern of the wood grain! I love the entire space, tons of personality.
dare I say...Clutter done right!
Wow...nobody will run out of things to say about your place when they come for a visit that's for sure!
I love it!
This is a great use of space! Great job! I just don't get The Clutter Police who are disturbed if someone has more than a coffee cup on a surface. Life must be very stressful for them. Looks like everything here is being used and enjoyed, and that's OK!
Marry me!
I love all your originality...your window valance is awesome!! It's obvious that you decorated with your heart.
Not my type of thing, but I'm very happy to finally see something personal and not some boring recreation of a corporate hotel chain or yet another MCM place. So, I'm totally voting for you!
No doubt one of the best bachelor pads I've ever seen! So awesome.
I favorited it precisely because of the stack of William Gibson books -- I have almost exactly the same thing going on with my own bookshelf. This feels like a space I could live in, not one of the empty souless places with all the gushing comments about "no clutter" which as far as I can tell equals a space showing zero personal possessions or any sense that an actual living person might inhabit the space.
Looks kind of cluttered. :/
Now why o why did you frame that heater...now why o why do I love it so much!! It's not the way I would decorate my place, but I love none the less!! I love that it looks like you live here and better yet, that you ENJOY living here! Good for you...KUDOS!!
Favorited for the lack of sterility and abundance of interesting things to look at (the books!)
Very creative. And the colors!
Tons of personality and creativity going on here. I love it!
Wow! I really enjoy your space- it's so personal & cool.
And OMG- where did you get the long paining over the bed that looks like something out of Blade Runner?? LOVE IT!
Thank you everyone and thank you AT for giving my place a chance.
@ PI, CHURUMBELA and YRNAMEHERE; I had no idea my book selection would make such an impact, thank you, even though I am not a huge reader, I do love these and can't wait for the next William Gibson book to come out.
@ LYONSTILL, DYNAMICDU07, KEIRA, LROSEK; For me, the room divider makes the home, I spent about a month planning it and even taping out the area of its location before attempting to build it. It really came together after I found the dresser with the same slanted drawers as in the kitchen and built in dresser next to the closet. I modified the drawers to house a desktop computer, and a DVD player. The smoked acrylic panels we're used to allowed the DVD remote to work while the drawer face was closed. The rest of it was built from stuff you can find at your local hardware store. I have to thank my girl friend for the hunk tree stump on the back of the tv, I had it for about a year before I ever got to show it off.
@ TRACY333, KEIRA; I would have posted a picture of my bathroom or kitchen had I been able to take a good one. The bathroom would have required a fish eyed lens just to get a good shot. I wasn't able to get good light in the kitchen and I really wanted to share some of the details that I have put in to the place. I do appreciate the input though.
@ PI, I am awful with grammer and spelling, so I apologize for my mistakes.
@ SHERRYBINNH, BEJEWELED; I couldn't imagine putting the bed anywhere else in such a small space. For over a year or so the mattress sat on the ground. I had to wait patiently for a bed frame to show up at the As-Is area. I attached the upholstered panels and the upholstered head and side board following.
@ BENNEMANS; I'm flattered but I don't think my girlfriend would approve.
@ INKHEAD; This was a recent addition that I also owe to my girlfriend. The fabric pattern is from Ikea, it also had the anime girl on it which was used for the pillows on the bed.
@ CHELLE BELLE; I was very careful to leave a one inch gap around the entire heater. Luckily being in Southern California, I rarely have to use it, but I am always nervous to turn it on.
Once again, thanks to everyone else. As someone who spends all his time "making," it's nice to get some of my work out there.
@ MANDAPANDA; Your right, that is straight out of Blade Runner. It's a partial copy of a rendering for the movie by the industrial designer Syd Mead. Being to cheap to have it printed, I painted it instead. When I first found the rendering, it was from the middle to the left hand side. I made up the rest of the painting to fill the space. Recently I discovered a full picture of the rendering that showed allot more. Technically the painting has never been finished, but I got distracted and just wanted to have it hung. I made the frame of it as well, which is covered in junk, looking like a three dimensional representation of the buildings in the art work. Although it's unlikely, I may take it off the wall and finish it one day.
I had to comment because Pattern Recognition is one of my favorite books, also your space is interesting...but my love for William Gibson is very much the reason that I had to say something!
brother, you are awesome! <3 xxoo
Oh, it's a bit too cluttered for my taste -- although I agree 100% with whoever said up there that it's *your* clutter, not *mine* ;) -- but I just had to comment because I LOVE your book collection!
I agree, clutter done right. :)
